Fermented in 48% new American oak, this fifth release of sparkling Pinot Gris (a multi-vintage of 2022 and 2023 fruit) may either be a declaration of independence from French oak or winemaker Gabriel Crowell’s love letter to his one-time home of Arkansas, the source of the white oak barrels that contribute richness and spice to this intensely fruity fizz. Brut at a dosage of 8g/L, the nose of pronounced fruit – preserved lemon, lime oil, and peach cobbler – suggests a more off-dry wine. 16 months on lees adds notes of honey glazed almond croissant, preserved pear, and apple blossom. Persistent, soft bubbles accompany a light, bright finish.
