Wine of the World

Named for the percentage of South Australian Cabernet Sauvignon that joined the Napa Valley fruit in its first 2018 release, Bin 149 has been a bit of a sleeper within the annual Penfolds Collection releases, but this vintage it really shows its class. The Aussie proportion will never exceed 14.9%, says chief winemaker Peter Gago, and this year is 12%, blended with 81% Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cabernet Franc from Howell Mountain. The aim for this Wine of the World is to showcase the Penfolds blending style through the black fruit intensity and structural tannins as well as the barrique maturation: 16 months in French oak (75% new) and American oak (25% new). Open aromas of dark brambles and black cherries, cassis sweetness and baking spices lead on to an inky, spicy, earthy palate – generous but with a steely tannic core. Impressive balance and length, with bay leaf and pencil lead freshness. Released at £160.
