Its decision to look beyond its existing vineyards to the Uco Valley has transformed the Zuccardi wines, says Patricio Tapia. He explains how a winery founded to showcase irrigation systems has become one of Argentina’s best...

Four Zuccardi wines to try

18.25/20pts (94/100pts)

Zuccardi’s newest wine, and another step along the road to investigating the Uco Valley terroir. In this case, it is a single vineyard with vines planted in 1998 over sandy, stony soils in La Consulta. A wine with tremendous structure shaped by tense, refreshing acidity and generous in black and red fruits, lightly spiced and with great depth.

Aluvional Malbec, La Consulta 2011

18/20pts (93/100pts)

This aims to offer a panorama of Malbec from La Consulta at 1,080m above sea level, one of the most important zones in the Uco Valley. An interpretation that – aided by a cool year – offers bright and juicy aromas. The acidity is lively and prickly, while the cherry flavours and violet notes dance on the tongue.

Zeta Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon, Valle de Uco 2011

17.75/20pts (92/100pts)

This wine has aimed, since its first vintage in 2002, to show the best of the Uco Valley. The 2011, made with Malbec from La Consulta and Cabernet Sauvignon from Gualtallary, has flavours full of liqueur and chocolate, and candied cherries. It is huge on the palate, yet smooth and lush with it. Excellent in its voluptuous style.
