Crozes-Hermitage 2024: Our expert’s picks in a year where selection is key

Lighter in body than a typical vintage but fresh, approachable and crisp with defined berry fruits. Not showy but will provide refreshing drinking young and is likely to be very good with age as well, despite this being a 'lesser' vintage for reds. From parcels right next to Hermitage.

Blackberry, blackcurrant and a touch of charcoal. Rounded, plenty of fruit here and no lack of concentration, this is juicy and quite powerful for a 2024. Oak is present but well integrated – there's enough fruit to meet it. Fresh and appealing with a long finish, it's a very good 2024 that transcends the vintage but needs time for the oak to integrate. Destemmed fruit, no new oak, just recently used barrels.

Lovely nose of fresh herbs and juicy berries. Fine palate weight, this is riper and more concentrated than most, without being forced. It has length, freshness and is very well balanced. A dead cert.

Closed on the nose at the time of tasting but a great palate that is concentrated and juicy, with loads of fruit and freshness. Much more to it than most Crozes this year. Good length of fruit, it's very promising.

Fresh, with bright, spicy and woodsmoke tones, lovely acidity and fine tannin. The oak is well judged and there's a resinous, balsamic edge to the long finish. One of the more successful Crozes of the vintage.

Beautiful, expressive, open and lively on the nose – singed herbs and red fruits, then fine tannins and good acidity. Finishes with precision and good fruit, this is a very successful, bright, fresh and well-balanced Crozes; a real achievement in this tricky vintage.

Raspberry and rose, sweet red fruits on the palate. A structural, slim style with sharp cheekbones, it has attractive aromatics and refreshing tannins, finishing neat and dry.

Enjoyable herbal scents over full, rich berry fruit coulis. More fruit than most this year and more depth, with a good sense of ripeness and there's length of fruit too. Very good for this challenging vintage.

Wonderful nose of roots and herbs over red berry fruits. Good concentration and fresh, with plump, juicy tannins. Provides a lot of pleasure, this is one of the better 2024 Crozes.

A fresh expression, with spicy oak and smoky bacon layered with flowing acidity. Overall it's well balanced, in a brisk and drinkable style.

Fresh, appealing rose and raspberry scents. Very fine tannins that are gently grippy, making for a pure, drinkable, light and aerial style. Drink young.

Good concentration for a 2024, there's wealth of fruit and intensity here. Defined, fresh, acidulated berry fruit and plentiful tannins, it's a fruity, crunchy, spicy Crozes with texture and vitality. Very good for the vintage.

This is lovely, showing smoky embers on the nose, then soft, ripe black fruits on the palate. Soft and velvety, the tannins are quite denim-like in texture but should smooth out with further élevage. Very promising and the best wine yet from this estate.

Slight reduction on both the nose and palate, but this is fresh and slender with fine tannins. Liquorice flavours, a focused and direct, black-fruited style. Has enough fruit sweetness, so it's not as mean as some in 2024. Very drinkable, best to decant.

Eucalyptus, menthol and juicy blackberry fruit – good weight and concentration. Lovely, juicy berry acidity, ample chewy tannin and the oak is very well integrated, supporting the fruit without muscling in. One of the better Crozes this year, it has the weight and density that others lack. Old vines from the villages de Chanos-Curson (Chassis) Pont d’Isère (Les Flouris) and Roche de Glun (Saviauds). 30% whole bunch.

Smoky reduction isn't excessive, it's quite appealing. Defined acidulated berries. Not long or concentrated, but fresh and crunchy. Has energy; drink young.
