As evenings draw in, it’s easy to look primarily at bold reds – of which Portugal doesn’t have shortage of – as your go-to wine. But this might be a disservice: to the season, the country, and yourself.
The cold months call for creative thinking and, if anything, provide a great opportunity to explore different styles in different ways. An oak-aged rosé? A rich, full-bodied white Vinho Verde? An amphora-aged Douro red? Why not.
It’s precisely in the unexpected and overlooked that you’ll find Portugal’s true gems, making the most of the Atlantic-facing country’s terroirs, indigenous grapes and winemaking talent.
Freshness and diversity
Although the sun-drenched, cork-tree lined vineyards of Alentejo or the undulating slopes of the Douro might be the images most easily conjured when thinking of Portuguese wine, the country’s essence is more complex. At its core is an Atlantic coast battered by winds and waves, rough granite mountains and moody valleys, where winters are as inclement as the summers.
The selection below highlights that perhaps unexpected common denominator across Portugal’s best wines, from north to south by way of the islands: inherent freshness, expressed in different forms – vivid acid, saline minerality, crunchy fruit – but always present to make each bottle, first and foremost, a pleasure to drink.
With freshness comes a structural balance and aromatic nuance that delivers both drinkability and cellaring potential. Nothing better for winter drinking, when what you need are wines that, ideally, deliver on both fronts – and can either be opened spontaneously for festive guests or saved for later, to cure those January blues.

The proposition is still there, no doubt, but is perhaps more appealing at the top, rather than lower, shelves. There are plenty of fine wines – collection-, investment- and gift-worthy – worth discovering and spending more on.
Although perhaps more expensive than the Portuguese wines you usually buy, they offer highly competitive quality and character (and even appreciation value, if that’s what you’re going for) when compared to their European counterparts.
Prefacing our 2026 features
By featuring some of the most exciting Portuguese regions and producers, this winter selection also works as a prelude to what’s coming up, chez Decanter, in the new year.
We’ll be looking more closely at the wines of Lisboa and Tejo, the dynamic regions north of the country’s capital city; assessing the outstanding transformation (and differentiation) of sprawling Alentejo; and analysing Douro’s ongoing trajectory of change coupled with soul-searching – a fascinating if tough period that ultimates benefits us all with an ever improving still wine production.
From the sea-sprayed vineyards of Lisboa, to the slate soils of Douro and Portalegre, and the rediscovered indigenous grapes of Madeira this is a winter selection that defies assumptions and will transport you to dramatic landscapes, one sip at a time.

Delicious, fun and moreish, this ancestral-method fizz makes the most of Fernão Pires’ fruit intensity and textural appeal. It spends an average of eight months on the lees, developing a subtle creaminess and frangipane richness that underscores the fleshiness of the quince and apple fruit. Fragrant top notes of sage, thyme and tarragon contribute both earthiness and lift.

Beautiful structure, at once intense and poised, built around an elegant, fleshy nuttiness and assertive grip. Rich orchard fruit mingles with fresh walnuts, salted cashew and marzipan in the mouthfilling yet bright palate. Layers of yellow apple peel, pear peel, mango, papaya, and melon at the core, topped with clementine and lemon zest and drenched in orange juice. It will be super interesting to see how this evolves in bottle.

Truly delicious, expressive and technically accomplished expression of Sémillon; textural, deep and elegant. A great showcase of Ode's superb, and evolving winemaking programme, lead by talented winemaker Maria Vicente. Opens with alluring flintiness, followed by moreish preserved lemon, toasted almonds, quince and white grapefruit flesh. Long finish with an energetic zesty grip. Beautiful, gentle spiciness on the semas. A pleasure to drink now but will also age beautifully.

Lovely textural and aromatic complexity in this Alvarinho produced without the addition of sulphites and bottled with filtration or fining. While retaining the trademark wet stone minerality of the grape variety, region and Soalheiro's style, it has a distinct preserved lemon cremosity and nuanced, delicious herbaceous edge of dry hay and chamomile. A strong mineral backbone holds the framework of this complex yet subtly approachable wine that flows through the palate with assertive freshness. Viosinho, Arinto, Códega do Larinho and a sprinkle of Alvarinho are blended with laidback mastery, for a wine with equal amounts of classicism and energy. White peach, green apple and melon are drenched in white grapefruit juice and sprinkled with white pepper, aniseed and chopped almonds. Aged for ten months in 500-litre French and Hungarian oak barrels - which never comes to the forefront - there's lovely texture and a delicious hint of smoke, adding vividness and depth.

An superb - and great value - everyday drinker from the dynamic cooperative of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, a municipality in northeast Portugal. Síria, Fonte Cal and Malvasia Fina wre blended and aged in concrete tanks, creating a wine of delicate florality, subtle herbaceousness and appealing fruit intensity, with a refreshing salinity. Greengage, frangipane, yellow apple, jasmine and orange blossom mingle playfully. A great companion to ouers d'oeuvres and soft cheeses.

Fermented on the skins, with five days of maceration, this is a well-crafted orange wine and characterful interpretation of Moscatel. An assertive phenolic grip supports the red apple, nectarine, loquat and furry peach flavours. A delicious touch of Amaretto adds a moreish twist, while linden and dry hay linger on the long finish.

A remarkable rosé framed by notes of tobacco, cherry leaf and flint. Opens to a palate of crunchy sour cherry, pomegranate and cranberry fruit, followed by a long tail of rhubarb and blood orange zest. A blend of Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca and myriad other Douro varieties, it’s fermented and aged for four and a half years in barrel, which underscores its assertive minerality.

Still in its infancy, this wine has an outstanding potential to improve and flourish in years to come. It is already a pleasure to drink, with its slatey, refreshing tannins framing the deep plum, blackberry and black cherry fruit. Broody notes of black olive, petrichor and thyme play in the background. Juicy undercurrent, with wet stone lifting the fruit intensity and deep savouriness, and carrying the wine through to its long finish.

A beautifully crafted Alfrocheiro-based blend, very approachable - with an inherent freshness and drinkability - but also layered complexity and ageing potential. There's a rustic finesse to it that gives it character and class. The enveloping nose, at once fragrant and deep, weaves petrichor, Earl Grey, wet tobacco leaves and cocoa powder. The palate follows with pure flavours echoing the aromas. Red plum and cranberry jam sit juiculy at the core, with a subtle lining of white pepper and saffron. A touch of zesty, blood-orange grip adds further energy.

Loads of character and sense of place in this complex, dynamic red from Madeira, showcasing the nearly forgotten Tinta Negra grape (also known as Tinta Bastarda in the Canary Islands). Balanced and vibrant, with sour cherry, cranberry, redcurrant and pomegranate layered with tobacco leaf, coffee bean, smoked bacon and saffron. Sprinkled generously with pink pepper and aniseed. Broody petrichor plays in the background.

A really characterful wine, that leverages the savoury, moreish appeal of Syrah with mountainous herbal fragrance and mineral freshness. Intense, fleshy black cherry, black olive, blackberry and blueberry jam are sprinkled with salty liquorice and black peppercorn. An textural smoky backdrop of Earl Grey, dark chocolate and tobacco adds depth and nuance. A wine still shy and restrained, in need to time to integrate its layers. Good ageing potential here.

Outstanding vividness and purity of flavour in this Touriga Nacional-based Douro blend, layered, complex yet remarkably fresh. There's ripe plum and cherry but also crispy red apple and juicy pomegranate, all topped with perfumed sage, oregano and thyme, and sprinkled with cocoa nibs and liquorice powder. Spicy outline to the tannins addins further definition and energy.

A wine that tests the potential of Alfrocheiro, Tinta Grossa and Baga in Alentejo - a smart choice that might prove essential as the region grapples with climate change. Fermented and aged in cocciopesto amphorae and terracotta tinajas, this has lovely purity of fruit and softness of tannins. The latter have a lot of character, with a mountainous, savoury structure. Juicy plum, greengage, redcurrant and cherry are cloaked in fragrant eucalyptus, bayleaf, mint and pine, all peaking through a veil of cocoa powder and liquorice.

Vivid and pure, this traditional Doro field blend was aged in 12 months in traditional clay amphorae, lined with beeswax, for 12 months. A juicy core of dark cherry, mulberries, plum and damson fill the mouth, framed by round yet assertive tannins, with a touch of graphite, and lifted by lively acid. Beautiful and nuanced bouquet, with Parma violets, mountain herbs and fried sage. Drinking beautifully now but with great potential to age in bottle.

Yet another delicious vintage of Teles' Gilda, with Maraschino Cherry, red plum, cranberry and pink grapefruit jumping from the glass. The tannins are both sweet and zesty, with sour cherry energy and grip. Long, smokey tail of Rooibos tea and sage.

A wine with approachable complexity and elegant rusticity. A blend of Aragonês (Tempranillo), Trincadeira, Castelão and Alicante Bouschet, that smartly leverages each variety. Crunchy plum and mulberry fruit with a delicious seam of coffee beans and dark chocolate. Deft integration of both wood and alcohol. Pleasant grip, at once zesty and savoury.

A versatile and fun blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, light and crunchy, with a pleasant sourness that gives it energy, intrigue and great food-matching potential. Cherry, cranberry and pink grapefruit, topped with sage, bayleaf and coriander seeds, mingle on the textural, grippy palate. The tannins ar once zesty, drenched in blood orange, and herbal, with a lining of thyme and Campari.

Crunchy red and blue fruit mingle on the palate supported by vibrant acid and zesty tannins. So drinkable but never simple, with alluring layer of fruit, herbs and sotobosque. A bottle that elevates the 'everyday drinking' concept to a new level.

Vivid acid and lively zestiness set the tone of Kopke's youngest aged white Port. Approachable yet deep, carrying the 114 gr/L residual sugar with ease. The mouth fills with juicy mandarin, crunchy red apple, cooked quince, and Asian pear, coated with a fine glaze of chestnut honey. Subtle notes of dried apricot and sweet spice in the background.

Ines is Decanter’s regional editor for Spain, Portugal and South America. Born and raised in Lisbon, Portugal, she grew up chasing her grandfather among his vines in Ribatejo and thus her love for all things wine began. After completing her Masters Degree in Architecture, Ines worked as a project manager while writing about wine and doing cellar consulting on the side. After moving to London in 2015, she decided to dedicate herself fully to the wine industry and joined the sommelier team at Michelin-starred Spring, Somerset House. Stints at Noble Rot and The Laughing Heart followed, while completing her WSET Diploma in Wines and Spirits.
