Pommard was generally very successful in 2019.
Brian Sieve, chef de cave at Domaine de Montille, said Pommard needed a ripe year to shine, and that ripening was aided by the dryness of the year, adding that it was one of the five driest vintages ever.
Paul Zinetti, winemaker at Comte Armand, agreed, saying the small amount of rain on 11 September allowed the grapes to finish their ripening perfectly. The Clos des Epeneaux was picked on 13 September with yields of 32hl/ha to 35hl/ha.
By contrast, there was more variation in Volnay.
The frost devastated the low-lying vineyards of Lafarge, but Frédéric Lafarge extolled the ‘subtle purity and balance’ of the 2019 vintage.
At the nearby Domaine Marquis d’Angerville there was less damage, and the vines were picked at an average 13.5% potential alcohol.
The parcels of Domaine Henri Boillot in Volnay were in danger of sunburn, so the Pinot Noir was harvested first, on 6 September, before the whites.
