The wines come from a range of regions, from Champagne to Washington and Bordeaux to Burgundy.

Some have been part of retrospective vintage tastings – such as Bordeaux 1990s: the complete guide of which two of the 14 100-point wines feature as well as two from Decanter’s first Washington reds vintage report both from the same producer in the Red Mountain AVA.

Some were from special producer vertical tastings – such as one wine from the Château Pontet-Canet: Tasting 10 years of biodynamics and two white wines that appeared in the Tasting five decades of Louis Latour’s Corton-Charlemagne article.

A wine from a second New World region also features in this year’s list. The Pinot Noir from New Zealand was given the ultimate accolade as part of one of Decanter magazine’s new features on getting to know a region by looking at a ‘good, better, best’ wine.

Two mature Burgundy wines also appear as well as two Champagnes.

A sweet wine from Bordeaux’s Sauternes appellation completes this year’s list providing perfect-scoring red and white wines in dry, sweet and sparkling styles.

Bollinger, Brut Vintage Vieilles Vignes Françaises, Champagne, France, 2002

My wines
Locked score

A superb vintage, with warm, dry conditions promoting ripening and cool nights helping retain acidity. This vintage still contained fruit from the ungrafted vines in Bouzy, and Bollinger waited until 20 September to pick (nearly a week later than everyone). After fermentation in cask and eight years ageing under cork, the wine was dosed at 4g/L to produce this momentous wine, a true show stopper. At this point, it is starting to open well, with notes of ripe apricot and quince, toasted brioche, and marzipan – there is a near-perfect evolution, with nothing over the top. Should last forever.

Philipponnat, Clos des Goisses, Champagne, Champagne, France, 1979

My wines
Locked score

Everyone was astonished by the pure aromatics and gorgeous palate precision from this regularly-sized bottle, delivered with pleasurable creamy texture and toffee notes. Disgorged 31 years after the harvest, bubbles are felt but hardly evident, adding subtle contour to a palate of superb structure and lively acidity. 'This is my favourite,' Philipponnat proclaimed, and it was easy to see why. Production was below average, at 20,000 bottles. Available in France for €1,350 a bottle, it truly reflects the overused term 'rare elixir'.

Louis Latour, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Burgundy, France, 1989

My wines
Locked score

Unbelievable! At 31 years of age, the 1989 retains a bright golden colour without an orange tinge. Displaying a subtle array of apricot-like notes, toasty nuttiness and delicate spice, it enlivens the palate with its amazing freshness. Each sip brings new flavours. Powerful and penetrating, this wine has both elegance and energy. You'd never guess its age. Paradoxically, it is both broad and precise simultaneously. Just gorgeous, even the scent from the empty glass is heavenly. It remains on a plateau with no signs of descending, at least judging from this bottle.

Louis Latour, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Burgundy, France, 1999

My wines
Locked score

Despite its two decades of age, the 1999 remains straw coloured and immediately fresh on the nose. Luxurious richness for which Corton-Charlemagne is known is front and center. Mint-like herbal notes and a firm mineral element add dazzle in the finish. Again, like the 1989, it’s both refined, robust and full of energy. In my experience, it’s been at its peak for at least a decade and shows no sign of fading. Although quality and quantity usually do not go together, Latour produced about 15% more in 1999 than their 40-year annual average of 48,000 bottles.

Domaine Coche-Dury, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Burgundy, France, 2019

My wines
Locked score

Stunningly good wine. Coche notes that the wine gives a very chalky impression, but that the marl component of the soil gives the fruit more sweetness and a rich, creamy texture not found elsewhere. Despite its light lemon-yellow colour, the wine is potently aromatic, with notes of ripe pear, nougat with hazelnuts, acacia flowers, citrus peel, and exotic spices. The texture on the palate is unabashedly rich, with luxurious density but enough acidity to bring the wine into a very sensual balance and lead it to an immense, lingering persistence on the palate. Approachable now, this will undoubtedly age for decades to come.

Château Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé, Bordeaux, France, 1996

My wines
Locked score

This is compelling, with a bright, forward currant fruit that is opening well now to show the nuance of game, earth, and gunflint to the ripe, dark fruit. The texture is tannic and fresh, with tannins starting to loosen but still in evidence. A luminous, radiant wine that will doubtless improve for another half-century. The vintage saw a solid flowering and fruit set and a warm July, but cool, rainy weather in August slowed ripening. The sun returned for most of September, but there was a bit of rain in the last week, although fine weather returned in October. At Lafite, 38% of the grapes went into the grand vin, a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot – more of this last and less Merlot than customary. From 1996 forward, the percentage of Cabernet was higher than it had been hitherto.

Château Margaux, Margaux, 1er Cru Classé, Bordeaux, France, 1996

My wines
Locked score

Softly spoken, fine tannins, pencil lead and leather, with truffle, earth, campfire and spice. Long drawn out finish, achingly slow, crushed stone, tobacco and dried roses. As with the 2001, the generosity and beauty of the aromatics tells you that this is absolutely ready to drink - although in many ways it feels like it will last longer than the 2001, as the tannins are still holding everything in place. This got the audience award on the night, and no question it is a stunning wine that is still giving so much pleasure at 25 years old. The 1996 has really grown into itself - it was a late harvest at the time after a burst of rain at the end of September that they decided to wait through before picking, and were rewarded with beautifully ripe Cabernet that was high in dense tannins and a little surly at first, but that has turned into one of the greatest vintages of the 1990s (rivaled only by the 1990 itself in my opinion). 2% Cabernet Franc completes the blend, 100% new oak.

Château Pontet-Canet, Pauillac, 5ème Cru Classé, Bordeaux, France, 1961

My wines
Locked score

Served over dinner at the château, this gets 100 points because such gorgeous complexity only comes from a great terroir after many years (nearly 60) in bottle. Indeed, from a regular format 75cl bottle, the colour looked younger than the 1975 from magnum, also served. And what gorgeous floral and veritable fine Cuban cigar aromas. The fresh, precise palate with silky tannin reflected not a 'big' wine, but a beautifully refined elixir and perfect for pairing with lamb and girolles. Showed off subtle notes of fine chocolate on an outstandingly long finish.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, La Tâche Grand Cru Monopole, Burgundy, France, 1971

My wines
Locked score

A small crop due to millerandage and heat that continued through September made for concentrated wine. According to the label, DRC managed 17,753 bottles of La Tâche. This one had been stored in an deep chalk cellar in the Surrey countryside. It was perfectly preserved, and still showed copious amounts of ripe fruit with mature notes of forest floor and black truffle. What lifted it to the next level was a the bouquet that combined mineral and savoury, almost animal character. On the palate it hung together well, still fresh and still remarkably plump, with none of the prune/treacle/caramel character that can affect mature wines. A marvelously memorable bottle.

Felton Road, Block 5 Pinot Noir, Central Otago, New Zealand, 2017

My wines
Locked score

Grown under an organic/biodynamic and non-interventionist regime, this wine perfectly captures the unique character of an extraordinary vineyard. It boasts great purity and power with layer upon layer of subtle flavours that include violets, red rose petal, dark cherry and mixed spices – a kaleidoscope of ever-changing characters most keenly displayed on the finish. It is delicate, fragrant and has enormous length. Wonderful now, I look forward to charting its progress with bottle age.

Petrus, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France, 1998

My wines
Locked score

Richly scented like you wouldn't believe; earthy truffle, black olive and rosemary fill the glass and don’t let up right through the palate, providing waves of first aroma then flavour. The vintage plays to all of Petrus’ strengths; a classic Merlot year that here combines velvety soft-edged tannins, caressing and cushioning the abundant black cherry, blackberry and bilberry fruit. Traces of campfire, mocha and liquorice are shot through every mouthful, and this is just so good. A small yield meant just 2,400 cases [of 12].

Quilceda Creek, Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, Washington, USA, 2018

My wines
Locked score

This is as good as it gets for Washington Cabernet Sauvignon. Right away the gorgeous crème de violette and crème de cassis tones join blackberry cordial, exotic spices and dark chocolate shavings. The combination of finesse and texture is downright scintillating. Sweet pipe tobacco is woven together with Black Forest cake, and fresh blueberries and graphite with shades of tar take shape on the palate. Truly sensational even at the three year mark, this will provide drinking enjoyment over the next 20 plus years.

The heady, intense and decadent Galitzine Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is just an incredible showing from this fantastic vintage on Red Mountain. A glass-staining purple, the bouquet is pure Red Mountain, showing off gorgeous scorched earth with violets, tar and tobacco leaf tones that all work together beautifully. The dense palate is plush and full-bodied taking you on a full-throttle joyride. Gorgeous Turkish coffee and crème de violette flavours deftly combine with blackcurrants, pipe tobacco, and cocoa-dusted black cherry flavours.

Château d'Yquem, Sauternes, 1er Cru Classé Superieur, Bordeaux, France, 1989

My wines
Locked score

A remarkable, profound example of how top Sauternes wines age, with intense notes of marmalade on the nose. Although it seemed there were some hints of passerillage, Sandrine Garbay confirmed no dried grapes made it into the blend. A subtle note of botrytis adds even more to the aromatics. Amber in hue, the palate is laden with complex flavours of tropical fruits, citrus notes of lime and orange zest, all supported by cleansing acidity and an intriguing mineral undertow. This still has at least 20 years ahead of it, perhaps a lot more. From a year where the growing season was very warm, before a cool and rain-affected September and much cooler October. 80% Sémillon, 20% Sauvignon Blanc. Residual Sugar: 127g/L.
