Marks & Spencer, Collection, Hattingley Valley English Sparkling Wine, Hampshire, England, United Kingdom, 2018

M&S has an enviable range of English wine, and this new cuvée, using the three traditional grapes, is a classy addition to the excellent top-tier Collection range. It's not cheap, but arguably better than many similarly-priced non-vintage Champagnes. There's real depth, roundness and complexity thanks to a portion of the wine being fermented and then aged for seven months in old Burgundy barrels, but not taking away from the brisk acidity or vibrant lemon and crisp Bramley apple bite. A serious and seriously delicious drop. Available in store or can be purchased online as a gift in a wooden box.

Allende, Blanco, Rioja, Rioja, Spain, 2018

Voted a Wine Champion by the Society's buyers, and deservedly so. Classic white Rioja from vineyards in Rioja Alta, displaying evolution but with life ahead of it too. Such complexity and enjoyment here, intense, toasty, oily and nutty, with some vanilla oak and citrus notes behind. Incredible length too. A real treat.

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, Riesling Roche Granitique, Alsace, France, 2020

Made from younger vines, the Roche range is an affordable alternative to Zind-Humbrecht's grand cru and single-vineyard wines. As the name suggests, this is a blend from different sites with granitic soils. Intense petrolly aromas, with bright citrus and hints of honey and stone fruit. Lovely purity of citrus fruit on the fresh, silky palate, with electrifying acidity and a distinct minerality. Will continue to improve in bottle.

Pasqua, Y by 11 Minutes, Veneto, Italy, 2021

This is part of a new and welcome trend for more complex and gastronomic rosés that have seen subtle oak contact during winemaking. A blend of Corvina, Trebbiano and a little Carmenère, the 11 minutes in the name refers to the length of time that the juice spends in contact with the skins, giving the wine its delicate salmon colour. It's elegant and savoury, with an attractive, almost oily weight in the mouth, and aromas and flavours of white flowers plus peach, mandarin citrus, redcurrant and pomegranate. Proof that great rosé doesn't have to be unoaked and / or Provençal.

Glenelly, Lady May, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2017

The 2017 Lady May is one of the best vintages produced here. The blend recalls the 2009 in proportion with a strong foundation of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, with which the Glenelly farm excels. To this is added 6% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. The fruit profile is ample, deep and layered with blackberry and cassis, touches of liquorice, toast and a whisper of tar, finishing long with concentration and intent, plus ripe, velvet tannins. An outstanding vintage for Lady May, with major ageing potential, this is only now starting to open up and drink well. It spent the usual 24 months in oak.

Cims de Porrera, Vi de Vila Tinto, Priorat, Catalonia, Spain, 2018

The producer's modern but very classic take on Priorat wines – powerful complexity underpinned by a vibrant acidity – is shown in this Cariñena-based blend whose soft tannins provide beautiful scaffolding to the forest fruit and wild herb flavours.

Yalumba, The Cigar, Coonawarra, South Australia, Australia, 2018

Named after the famous cigar-shaped strip of terrarossa soil in Coonawarra, rather than an affinity for strong tobacco, this red from Aussie stalwart, Yalumba, is fresh and vertical yet fleshed out with plush, vibrant dark fruits. Wood, spices, tobacco and potpourri waft through the long, fresh finish.
