Having celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2025, Cuatro Rayas inaugurated a new decade with a renewed commitment to the landscape and community that remain its foundations. The quality-first cooperative is future-proofing itself by leaning into its history, community of growers and incredible portfolio of old vines.
While dealing with the unpredictability of climate change and market fluctuation, Cuatro Rayas has the privileged standpoint of an organisation made resilient both by its cohesion and its structural diversity. Each of the cooperative’s 300 winegrowing members brings a wealth of knowledge, craftsmanship and determination, based on a multigenerational commitment to a shared vision.
The cooperative is facing today’s challenges with courage and creativity, as well as with the laidback confidence that time, experience and entrepreneurial spirit afford – and with the certainty that the key to building a sustainable future lies in the preservation of the natural and human resources of which it is custodian.
New paradigms
Cuatro Rayas is not just adjusting to different circumstances and challenges, it is shaping new operational paradigms.
Harvest time.
The cooperative’s viticultural programme considers not just the vines but the people that tend them. An obvious example is the decision to pay growers a fixed amount per hectare for low-yielding, higher prized plots, thus supporting the work and attention required to nurture those vineyards – which would not be appropriately rewarded under the usual per-kilo-on-arrival system.
Not merely a matter of financial reward, this sustains the preservation of key historical plots whose maintenance would otherwise not be financially viable.
This quality-first principle was also the driver behind the recent construction of a second winery, allowing for the simultaneous processing of grapes and thus better preserving the integrity and freshness of the fruit. This ability to react and work fast has become more important in the face of ever more extreme and sudden weather events, which often trigger swift, compressed harvests.

At the same time, the new winery also supports other research and development efforts at Cuatro Rayas. Among these are ongoing studies on soil profile which, along with the age and location of the vineyards, give incredible nuance to Rueda’s Verdejos. The new facilities have given the winemaking team the opportunity to expand their precision vinification experiments, resulting in an increased understanding of the character and potential of different sites.
Shared responsibility, shared rewards
This drive to improve, support and preserve justifies the many support and training initiatives offered to growers, facilitating the development of new skills as well as the transfer of knowledge between generations (through the aptly named Solera program).
Through mutual responsibility and empowerment, employees and growers at Cuatro Rayas can be part of the ongoing reevaluation of the incredible heritage of which they are custodians.
Members of Cuatro Rayas, like its vineyards, span multiple generations, villages, soil types and microclimates – each holding stories, challenges and unique potential.
