Bowler & Brolly, Winemaster's Lot Classic Cuvée Brut, Hampshire, England, United Kingdom

In store from November in time for Christmas and New Year festivities, this is the pick of Aldi's sparklings – and £2 cheaper than the Veuve Monsigny Premier Cru Champagne. Brisk acidity carries Chardonnay-led flavours of fresh green apple through a creamy lemon posset finish.

Dopff au Moulin, Cuvée Julien Brut, Crémant d’Alsace, Alsace, France

A refreshing crémant from sparkling specialist Dopff au Moulin, situated in Riquewihr, Alsace. A blend of Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois gives floral, pear and white peach aromas, with a bready, yeasty top note. I was won over by the pure lemony attack that melds into soft creamy bubbles.

Very expressive, with Greywacke’s trademark fleshiness and textural appeal. Luscious passion fruit, pineapple, guava and peach offset by refreshing lime zest and fragrant orange blossom. Good persistence, with elegance and generosity in equal measures.

A benchmark Finger Lakes Riesling, poised yet approachable, with lemon, ripe pear and melon. The palate has a classy assertiveness, with a soft mineral backbone and a subtle oiliness underpinned by yellow apple, pineapple and tangerine. A bright finish, with delicious salinity and vibrant acidity.

Esporão, Quinta do Ameal Loureiro, Vinho Verde, Portugal, 2020

Hand-picked from a granite vineyard in the Lima Valley. Vibrant citrus aromas, interwoven with white flowers, nuts and honey. Brisk mineral palate, with green apple, grapefruit and freshly cut lemon. A touch of creaminess from six months on lees. Focused linear acidity leads to a fresh, mouthwatering finish, with a touch of salinity - and suggests ageing potential. A lovely match for grilled fish and seafood – brilliant value for money.

Quintas de Caíz, Encostas de Caíz, Vinho Verde, Portugal, 2022

90

This expressive Vinho Verde is made from the rare Avesso grape, and is superior to the other Vinho Verde in the Wine Tour (yes there are two!). It's juicy and expressive, with ripe apple and pear flavours, and a rounded, almost honeyed finish. The spritz is barely detectable – just a good weight of fruit, and a hint of minerality.

Vigneti del Vulture, Pipoli Bianco, Basilicata, Italy, 2022

90
Pipoli is a blend of Fiano and Greco grown at altitude on the volcanic slopes of Mount Vulture. Smoky and mineral, its faintly exotic character ushers in creamy and spicy flavours of pineapple, mango, peach and apricot; somewhat reminiscent of a fruit-forward New England–style IPA.

Mas de Daumas Gassac, Moulin de Gassac Viognier, Pays d'Oc, Languedoc-Roussillon, France, 2021

Pretty, dancing florals and fluffy peach skin on the nose, opening onto a wide creamy palate with a fleshy texture and spiced apricot flavours. It lacks a little freshness, but this pure Viognier Pays d'Oc ticks many boxes. Fairly simple but well made.

You can really see the cooling influence of the Pyrenees in this unoaked red, sourced from old vines aged 70 years on average. Aromatically expressive, with violet, perfumed forest fruits and juicy dark plum. There's an attractive note of mountain herbs and fresh acidity, too.

Distant Noises, Pinot Noir, Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia, 2019

91
The personal project of Tom Carson of the Mornington Peninsula's Yabby Lake (impressive pedigree there), who – since he's achieved everything else – has set about making a premium Pinot at an accessible price. This is certainly that: crunchy, bright raspberry pip, red cherry and lifted rose and fennel notes.

Larry Cherubino, Apostrophe Possessive, Great Southern, Western Australia, Australia, 2020

From granite vineyards in Frankland River, this red blend features Shiraz, Grenache and Counoise, more commonly found in the Rhône. It clearly thrives in its Australian home, producing this juicy, fleshy and very drinkable wine. Bright brambly red fruit aromas lead to a palate that's layered with vibrant cherry fruit, spice and a touch of smoky leather, plus fine tannins. A neat Aussie twist on Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Vidal-Fleury, Côtes du Rhône, Rhône, France, 2018

Unpretentious and uncomplicated, but with a certain layered complexity. The velvety intensity of deep black fruit is offset by the savoury earthiness of garrigue, dried thyme and black olive tapenade. Firm, round tannins and a subtle balsamic touch, which adds a refreshing lift.

Marks & Spencer, 10 Year Old Tawny, Port, Douro Valley, Portugal

91
Tawny is one of my favourite Port styles, exchanging primary fruit for oak-aged complexity. This Tawny, made by Taylor's, is nutty and sweet, with spicy red fruits, a good dollop of woodiness, and acidity which sweeps away the 116g/l of residual sugar. Moreish.

With 388 grams per litre of sugar, a tiny glass of this luscious nectar is dessert in itself! Marshmallowy and creamy with dark brown sugar sweetness, it has enough balancing acidity not to be cloying and lingers with a coffee crème caramel richness.
