Celler Can Descregut, Reserva, Corpinnat, Catalonia, Spain, 2019

91
Lots of aromas fighting for position here: scorched lemons and green apple melding into smoky, bready, flinty characters. Complex toast and candlewax notes edge their way in on the palate, too. Impressive concentration and intensity; for under £20, you’re snapping up a bargain.

Bowler & Brolly, Specially Selected English Sparkling Rosé, Surrey, England, United Kingdom

89
Made by Denbies for Aldi, under its Bowler & Brolly label, this good-value English sparkling follows the successful launch of the non-vintage Winemaster's Lot Classic Cuvée Brut (£19.99) that you might still find on shelves ahead of a new batch in time for Christmas. A blend of 49% Seyval with Pinots Meunier and Noir in support, its delivers tart red berry notes alongside juicy, ripe citrus and orchard fruit crunch. Available on 20 April, just in time to toast St George's Day and King Charles III on his 6 May Coronation.

Domaine Naturaliste, Discovery Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon, Margaret River, Western Australia, Australia, 2021

93
Bruce Dukes is a Margaret River legend, so even this, one of his entry-level wines, punches well above its weight, offering real complexity and interest. The 17% Semillon makes its presence felt with pithy citrus and cut grass to support the Sauvignon's bright acidity and exotic tropical richness, and there's a compelling texture and toastiness thanks to judicious time in oak. White Bordeaux fans will love this.

Lay & Wheeler, Eva Fricke Riesling, Rheingau, Germany, 2020

93
Lay & Wheeler recently launched an own-label range and this Riesling, made by Rheingau pioneer Eva Fricke, is one of the top examples. The nose blooms with sultry honeyed apples, limes, beeswax and lemon posset, impressing with its perfect balance of ripe, lush fruit and clean acidity. Moreish and succulent.

Domaine Ciringa, Fosilni Breg Sauvignon Blanc, Štajerska, Podravje, Slovenia, 2020

92
In 2005, Austrian family estate Tement established a winery next door – in Slovenia. The vineyards abut one another yet Ciringa is just over the border. From limestone soils (Fosilni Breg means fossil mountain), this is a strikingly mineral wine with lemon juice purity and sweeter orchard fruit depth. Suitable for vegetarians.

Filos Estate, Chardonnay, Florina, Macedonia, Greece, 2022

91
One of Aldi's most talked about wines of the past two years was the Aspri Petra Assyrtiko from this producer. Decanter rated the 2020 and 2021 vintages highly, and while there is sadly no 2022 on Aldi's shelves, there is this lovely single-vineyard Chardonnay instead. Very youthful, with great intensity of green apple, white blossom and cashew creaminess and perky citrus acidity. It should age well so stock up while you can, and enjoy a bottle with the Sunday roast chicken.

Nouveau Wine Co, White Lies, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2022

91
Nouveau is a new brand that aims to make 'fresh expressions of small-batch, low-intervention wines'. Of its four current releases this Pinot Grigio is the best: attractive texture and grip, zingy green apple acidity, crunchy pear flavours and a creamy finish. A gentle introduction to 'natural' wine. Vegan.

Luigi Baudana, Dragon, Langhe, Piedmont, Italy, 2021

This unusual field blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Nascetta features pithy green and yellow fruits with some cream and tangerine inflections. Intense, spicy and complex. Luigi Baudana has been managed by G.D Vajra since 2009.

Pyramid Valley, Sauvignon +, Canterbury, New Zealand, 2019

90
There’s an enticing vibrancy to this wine (with a dollop each of Riesling and Pinot Gris) which lingers on the palate with spicy notes of wild fennel and cayenne pepper. The core is of classic lime zest, green apple, crunchy pear and gooseberry. An acid presence on the mid-palate makes it a good food companion.

Weingut Ecker-Eckhof, Roter Veltliner, Wagram, Niederösterreich, Austria, 2022

90
This ancient grape is unrelated to Austria's Grüner Veltliner – and rarely seen due to its fickle nature in the vineyard. But this is a tasty example that offers real interest at this price: exotic papaya and honeydew melon, juicy pear and a gently spiced creamy length.

Sandar & Hem, Bates Ranch Rosé, Santa Cruz Mountains, California, USA, 2019

91
Don't just pick the youngest rosé you can find – this Grenache was far more complex and appealing, in colour and flavour, than the current 2021 release in the UK. Stone fruit and melon aromas entice, then the palate is all wet stones, mandarin juice and yellow cherry flesh. Yum.

Château de Lascaux, Eclat de Garrigue, Languedoc-Roussillon, France, 2021

90
Jean-Benoît Cavalier founded this winery in 1984, but the now 84ha of vineyards (certified organic since 2009 and biodynamic since 2018) have seen 15 generations. This is a lovely Cinsault-Grenache-Syrah blend: wild strawberries, sappy fruit tannins and fresh herb perfume through the long finish.

Contesa, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, Abruzzo, Italy, 2022

90
Fun, fun, fun: this bubblegum-hued rosé made from the Montepulciano grape is as exuberantly flavoured as it looks in the glass, with ripe and juicy red cherry, strawberry and redcurrant fruit. The 2.7g/L residual sugar is barely discernible, so the only sweetness you'll find here is fruit sweetness. Super-drinkable. Vegan.

Santo Isidro de Pegões, Nico Rosé, Peninsula de Setúbal, Portugal, 2021

89
Made from Portuguese grape Castelão, this salmon-pink rosé has pretty strawberry and peach aromas. Delicate strawberries-and-cream palate, with fresh acidity and crisp grapefruit pith and lime on the finish. Not overly complicated but a great-value summer sipper, either on its own or with salads and light fish dishes.

Clos Roussely, Canaille, Touraine, Loire, France, 2021

92
A burst of pumped-up cherries on opening, flowing on to a concentrated palate full of juicy blackberries and raspberries. There’s a noticeable sucrosity, which is swept up by crunchy, tart fruit and a brushing of tannin. An easy-to-drink, characterful Gamay, which has seen part carbonic maceration. Would be perfect to share with a friend over a midweek meal.

Torbreck, Old Vines GSM, Barossa Valley, South Australia, Australia, 2018

92
Not to be confused with The Steading, an old-vine GSM, century-old sites still contribute to this Grenache-Mourvèdre-Shiraz, aged 24 months in French oak hogsheads. At a lovely point of its evolution now, it boasts great density of red and black berries, leathery-soft tannins and savoury coffee bean oak. Vegan.

Buenas Vides, Specially Selected Malbec, Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina, 2021

91
Confusingly, there are two 2021 Specially Selected Argentinian Malbecs under Aldi's Buenas Vides brand. The cheaper one (£6.29) with the pale blue and white label is still a popular and reliable buy, but if you can fork out a little more for this Uco Valley bottling, you won't be disappointed. Elegant black fruit aromas and powerful but poised flavours of boysenberry and blueberry, with dusty tannins and mouthwatering acidity. A classy drop to grace the Sunday lunch table.

Chiusa Grande, Tommolo Montepulciano, Abruzzo, Italy, 2021

91
A succulent, vibrant wine whose bramble and black cherry juiciness is intense but not heavy, inviting another sip. It is unashamedly fruit-forward, but supple, smoky tannins and lively acidity give it focus. The estate's organic 2021 Vinosophia Pecorino (from the same retailers) is also excellent.

Pablo Fallabrino, Barbera Especial, Canelones, Uruguay, 2020

91
Uruguay's wine scene is full of surprises and this enjoyable Barbera – a nod to Pablo Fallabrino’s Piedmont heritage – is a case in point. Fresh unoaked style: herbaceous berry aromas lead to a lively palate, low in tannin, packed with blackberries, cherries and plums. Spicy, savoury and balsamic hints add interest.

Waitrose, Loved & Found Caladoc, Pays d'Oc, Languedoc-Roussillon, France, 2021

90
A crossing of Grenache and Malbec, Caladoc combines the former’s juicy appeal and the latter’s inky depth and tannic presence. This approachable iteration is a perfect introduction to this underestimated grape, with its intense bramble and blackberry fruit flowing through a soft, refreshing framework.

Adnams, Carménère, Central Valley, Chile, 2021

89
Made for Adnams by Viña Ventisquero, this offers plenty of bang for your buck. Ripe blackberry and blueberry aromas, notes of blackcurrant leaf, mint, chocolate. Ripe and juicy, with soft tannins, packed with spicy berries, dried herbs and minty hints. An easy-drinker for summer barbecues.

A blend of Gamaret and Pinot Noir sourced from Valais. Floral with cranberry, blueberry and scents of rose potpourri on the nose, plus a touch of herbs. More blackberry and dark cherry liqueur on the palate, with earthy spices. Cocoa and plum notes to finish.

Sainsbury's, Taste the Difference Campo de Borja Garnacha, Aragón, Spain, 2021

A new vintage of this excellent-value Garnacha, which is made for Sainsbury's by Scotsman Norrel Robertson MW. Old-vine fruit from the foothills of the Moncayo Mountains creates this juicy little fruit bomb, that's packed with red cherries and berries. Dangerously drinkable!

Château Pech La Calevie, Monbazillac, Southwest France, France, 2020

93
Made in Bergerac, Monbazillac is far more affordable than Sauternes but made in the same style. This example is made entirely from Semillon, and is perfectly balanced, fully sweet but with freshening acidity, lifted peach fruit flavours and a hint of barley sugar. A chilled glass as an aperitif on a warm summer's day – heavenly.

Graham's, Fine White, Port, Douro Valley, Portugal

91
Graham’s white Port is fine indeed, unpretentiously balancing fleshy, sweet stone fruit with notes of fresh almonds, camomile and apple blossom. The perfect base for a Port & Tonic or simply on the rocks, this is a compulsory presence in one’s fridge door throughout spring and summer.
