Majestic is set on becoming the UK high street's leading destination for Italian wine, and just carried out a revamp of its range. This organic, everyday-drinking red has been in the range for a while, and – along with the Primitivo on offer from the same producer – is a good example of the value you can find in the country's south. Made from the Negroamaro grape, which translates as 'black' (negro) and 'bitter' (amaro), you do indeed find an appealing balance of sweet fruit and a darker edge. There's a touch of residual sugar (5g/L), but it's all in balance with the wine's other elements. Unoaked to help the bright fruit character sing, this is fresh but full of flavour, with dark, bitter cherry fruit juiciness. Perfect pizza wine. Mix six price £13.
