English sparkling wine producer, Ridgeview, have celebrated the release of their latest vintage under contemporary new branding. See Amy Wislocki’s tasting notes and scores…
Ridgeview wine estate launched its new look at the Savoy Hotel in London last month, marking a ‘bold move away from the previous classic and traditional packaging, to a contemporary, modern and proudly English design,’ said the Sussex winery.
Ridgeview’s new releases include Blanc de Blancs and Blanc de Noirs sparkling wines, as well as a ‘Rosé de Noirs’, priced between £50 and £60.

‘We can now confidentially stand on our own two feet and tell the story of our part in the historical rise of English sparkling wine,’ said chief executive Tamara Roberts.
The rebranding is aimed to court consumers’ burgeoning interest in English sparkling wine, following on from last year’s reports of record-breaking revenues from increased demand.
‘Sparkling wine accounts for nearly 70% of the wine made in England, with production now at around 6 million bottles,’ according to Ridgeview.
‘With another 2 million vines planted over the last two years it is suggested that the industry could be producing up to 40 million bottles by 2040.’

Ridgeview’s new design was made in collaboration with Brighton agency CookChick, who have previously worked to rebrand other British drinks brands like Thatchers cider, St Austell and Adnams breweries.

It's exuberant on the nose, with honeyed red apple fruit and yeasty autolytic character. Harmonious, with no sharp edges, this has focussed fruit and mellow depth. It's a single-vineyard wine from the original block that was planted by the founders in the late 1990s – among the oldest Chardonnay vines in the country. The long track record shows also in the complexity of this forward and fruit-driven fizz.

Ripe and rounded, this has the structure to match full-flavoured dishes – or enjoy as an aperitif when you're looking for power rather than delicacy. It's brimming with rich, red fruits and toasty brioche yeastiness. One of three limited-release wines from Ridgeview in the excellent 2014 vintage.

This starts with a very attractive nose of cox’s apple and pomegranate. It feels very young and a little tight on the palate. The lees and the fruit haven't quite resolved with each other, and the finish is still a little raw.
