Wines for the week: March 2023

Case Paolin, Col Fondo Brut Nature, Prosecco, Asolo Superiore, Veneto, Italy

My wines

91

A bone-dry, focused, almost steely Col Fondo, with all the fleshiness and texture that are trademarks of the style – and of Case Paolin. Flavours of white grapefruit, lemon zest, crunchy pear and crystallised ginger make for a mouthfilling glass. Crunchy acid and a floral lining balance the weight. Yum.

Antech, Mademoiselle Marguerite Brut, Blanquette de Limoux, Languedoc-Roussillon, France

My wines

88

A lightly steely, delicate nose leads onto a frothy, foamy palate which balances ripe yellow apple and nutty tones with an intriguing waxy note. The finish is tangy in taste but soft in texture. A fairly simple but individual fizz that ticks the mid-week sparkler box. The grapes, of which 90% are the region's flagship Mauzac, were harvested by hand, and the wine has had at least 24 months on lees - considerably more than the designated nine month minimum. Winemaker Françoise Antech-Gazeau, who plays an active role in the region's both social and winemaking communities, has been joined by her son Baptiste, who now represents the seventh generation to make wine at this large, well-known but good quality fizz producer in Limoux.

Laurent Miquel, Lieu-Dit La Vérité Viognier, Pays d'Oc, Languedoc-Roussillon, France, 2020

My wines

94

Mellow orchard fruit, honeyed lemon and acacia aromas provide a seductive intro to this Viognier, from a selection of small plots in the hills near the village of Cessenon, in the St-Chinian growing area. Accomplished, even a little showy, the fermentation and maturation in French oak has given vanilla and spice flavours, and there’s good breadth on the palate; a flowing torrent of golden fruit with the call of the Languedoc sunshine.

Mullineux, Kloof Street Old Vine Chenin Blanc, Swartland, South Africa, 2020

My wines

93

There’s a robust elegance to this wine, poised but with a certain rustic edge. The saline zestiness of preserved lemon is topped by delicate pear peel and orange rind. Nuances of fresh almond and cashew add body, creaminess and complexity. Enveloping, characterful and simply delicious.

Château Guiraud, G de Guiraud, Bordeaux, France, 2019

My wines

92

A powerful and complex Bordeaux white made by blending Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc half-and-half. Flinty asparagus, gooseberry and nectarine on the nose, with magnificent smokiness on a savoury palate of crunchy green fruits and mushy peas. White spices and vanilla notes towards the finish, thanks to 7 months of ageing in oak. Deliciously long.

Château Julia, Assyrtiko, Drama, Macedonia, Greece, 2021

My wines

92

Château Julia doesn't sound very Greek, but this is textbook Assyrtiko. It's fairly understated on the nose at present, but has brisk grapefruit juiciness, with some warm lemon peel and firm peach, a mineral streak and salinity. There's weight and structure behind the fruit, and a refreshing sapidity. Very classy.

Domaine Jones, On The QT Bin 31: Dry Muscat, Languedoc-Roussillon, France, 2021

My wines

92

Such an intriguing, delicious expression of Muscat in which the floral aspects, rather than dominating, add gentle nuances to the lemon, pear and yellow apple fruit. There's a delicious savouriness imparted by touches of garrigue, hay and preserved lemon. Very good drive, assertive acid and a medium zesty finish. Very accomplished winemaking here.

Bodegas Ramón Bilbao, Límite Norte, Rioja, Northern Spain, Spain, 2017

My wines

92

A blend of rare Maturana Blanca and Tempranillo Blanco, planted at 450m in northern Rioja. Fermented in concrete; light oak ageing adds texture to a full-bodied palate. Layers of ripe honeyed citrus, preserved lemon, grapefruit, nuts and herbs underpinned by vibrant acidity with a brisk saline finish. An assured debut. Vegan.

Bukolyi Marcell, Köves Egri Csillag Grand Superior, Egri Borregio, Hungary, 2021

My wines

91

Egri Csillag, or ‘Star of Eger’, is the white counterpart to the region's renowned 'Bull's Blood' blend. This organic edition consists of Furmint, Hárslevelű and Riesling. A golden hue to the pale lemon colour, it has a pure, ripe nose of yellow peach, mango and blood orange. High acidity on the attack led to a saline, textured undertone of citrus zest, more stone fruits, and confected quince on the back palate. Warming spices on the long finish of honeydew melon, hinting at the 14.5% alcohol.

Clos de la Vierge, Jurançon Sec, Southwest France, France, 2020

My wines

This delicious white is a superb food-friendly pick, made by two sisters now in their 70s. Comforting aromas of stone fruits, lanolin and sweet spices combine with a waxy, subtly textured, intense and creamy palate full of grilled pineapple and citrus zest then a tight and saline finish with bright acidity.

Morrisons, The Best Chardonnay, Coastal Region, South Africa, 2021

My wines

91

A South African Chardonnay, produced by Trizanne Signature Wines of the Coastal Region, which has been aged on lees for 3-6 months without any use of oak. It has a savoury, spiced nose of pineapple and creamy egg tart. Melon and citrus on the palate, textured with buttery peach, balanced by mineral acidity (5.71g/l). More honeyed yellow fruits and grapefruit zest towards the long finish. Excellent value.

Tyrrell's, Brookdale Semillon, New South Wales, Australia, 2022

My wines

91

Based in Hunter Valley, Australia, Tyrrell's produces one of the world's most famous (and delicious) Semillons, Vat 1. This more entry-level wine showcases the typical character of young Semillon, with lime flower perfume on the nose, bracing acidity and a depth of juicy lime citrus fruit on the palate. It's very enjoyable now – try it with sushi – but I'd urge you to buy a bottle or two to lay down. Leave it for a few years and it will start to develop nuttier, toastier characteristics, despite spending no time in oak during vinification. On sale from end October 2022.

My wines

The M&S Found range is a shining light in the supermarket's lineup, and this Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) from the Pfalz region is delightfully fresh and saline, with juicy peach flavours giving roundness to the dry and bright palate. Castellore, Ribolla Gialla, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy, 2021

My wines

89

Joining a Grillo and Verdicchio, this is another new Italian white on Aldi's shelves, all of which offer enjoyable drinking under £7. This is light and breezy, with lifted blossom notes and racy flavours of tart plums and green apples. Give this a try instead of Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc.

Ancient Valley, Aleksandrouli, Georgia, 2019

My wines

94

Georgia was top of the hit list for Naked Wines' buyers Ray and Matt and they've unearthed some approachable wines at affordable price points with their first Georgian winemaker Luka Beshidze. Aleksandrouli is an indigenous Georgian variety, and is expressed here in a smoky guise, with complex elements of tea leaves, plant leaves, sap and smoked meat. The fruit is ripe and strawberry-driven, making this juicy and drinkable as well as complex. The tannins are fine-grained and it finishes with long, refreshing acidity. Member exclusive at £15.99.

Reyneke, Cornerstone, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2018

My wines

92

Seductive nose of plum, red apples and smoke. On the palate, vibrant flavours of plum, black cherry and tapenade rest on a layer of black chocolate. This chocolate aspect is particularly present on the medium finish, deliciously coating the mouth. Really enjoyable wine that pays tribute to the workers – the 'cornerstones' – of the Reyneke farm and winery.

Scala Dei, El Tribut, Priorat, Spain, 2021

With price and the need for long cellaring often a barrier, this new wine gives Booths customers a chance to experience the brooding, dark, inky depths, firm tannins and searingly high acidity of Priorat from the appellation's founding winery. Revel in the intense, tight, mineral black fruit and wild herbs. Unoaked, with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon making up 40% of the blend. Vegan.

Chameleón is a new unoaked Malbec from organic producer Domaine Bousquet, launched to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Bousquet family's move from their native France to Argentina's Tupungato. Black berries, black cherry and violets on the nose. High altitude freshness balances juicy black fruit and plums on the palate, with silky tannins and savoury spice notes on the long finish.

An ambitious blend of Aragonês, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Trincadeira, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Syrah. Dense, spicy black fruit aromas, with hints of leather, plum and dried, woody herbs. Full, deep and concentrated palate, loaded with dense black fruit. Layers of leather, spice, cigar box, dark chocolate and fresh brambly notes, with smooth tannins and a long finish. Will continue to evolve in bottle.

Villa Annaberta, Amarone della Valpolicella, Veneto, Italy, 2019

My wines

91

Fermented in stainless steel tanks before maturing in a mixture of tonneaux, barriques, and conical wooden vats for 20 months, this elegantly-styled Amarone from sustainable winery, Villa Annaberta is intense, sticky and spicy, with baked fruit flavours alongside some tobacco and forest floor notes. Succulent and fresh, its richness is well balanced by good acidity. Platinum medal winner at DWWA 2022.

Sainsbury's, Taste the Difference Chateau Tanunda Barossa Red, South Australia, Australia, 2020

Made by iconic Barossa winery Chateau Tanunda, this is brilliant value for money. The blend for 2020 is 70% Cabernet and 30% Merlot (20%), aged in used French and American hogshead barrels for 18 months. Black berry aromas, with notes of mint choc chip. The rich black fruit palate has fresh hints of blackcurrant leaf and plum, with well-judged tannins. An ideal winter warmer!

My wines

A very interesting addition to the Loved & Found range and a fun yet alluring pour. Crunchy red fruit and a zesty touch of blood orange, supported by well presented tannins and acidity. The back palate has a candied red fruit element, but the fresh backbone prevents it from losing balance.

An unoaked, cheerful 100% Tempranillo from Rioja crafted by Bodegas Eguía of Muriel Wines. Fragrant red cherry and strawberry on the nose, strawberry juice and dried herbs on the palate, soft textured but no lack of balance. Piandimare, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Abruzzo, Italy, 2020

My wines

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is known for its soft, caressing fruit profile, and this wine is exactly what you’d expect: spiced plum and chocolate aromas introduce a core of soft, plummy flavours with potpourri overtones framed by good acidity and some structural tannins. The chocolatey finish is lifted by balsamic freshness.
