Villa Maria, Sparkling Cuvee Brut NV, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

90
New from dependable NZ producer Villa Maria, this charmat-method sparkler is a blend of 82% Chardonnay and 18% Pinot Noir. Fruit is sourced from Gisbourne and Hawke's Bay, with the blend containing reserve wines to add complexity. Toasty, creamy, walnut aromas with notes of fresh pastries. Rounded palate with fresh acidity: honeyed notes balanced by toasty citrus and lemon tart, with a long, crisp finish. Great value!

Segura Viudas, Cava Brut, Cava, Penedès, Spain, 2021

89

New on the shelves at Tesco, this is a little pricier than some high-street Cavas, but still good value. Made using the traditional Champagne method, by a small estate that can trace its history back to the 11th century, the wine has a lovely weight of yellow apple fruit, and a toasty nutty finish. The packaging is classy too, so a great option to serve at a dinner party, or gift.

Greywacke, Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand, 2022

93
Very expressive, with Greywacke’s trademark fleshiness and textural appeal. Luscious passion fruit, pineapple, guava and peach offset by refreshing lime zest and fragrant orange blossom. Good persistence, with elegance and generosity in equal measures.

Heggies Vineyard, Cloudline Chardonnay, Eden Valley, Eden Valley, South Australia, Australia, 2022

92

From vines planted at 500 metres above sea level, this Eden Valley Chardonnay was fermented and aged for 8.5 months in French barriques with a touch of new oak. Flinty smoke aromas open up to creamy yuzu and candied pear on the nose and palate. Textured and oily with great depth of grapefruit zest and a saline tone, leading to a spicy finish.

Château Guiraud, G, Bordeaux, France, 2022

A classy, complex nose of passion fruit, mango, lemon tart and gooseberry. Great intensity on the savoury palate with a smokey undertone. Creamy hazelnuts, yuzu zest and green fruits, seasoned with vanilla seeds, lead to a touch of spice on the finish.

Toni Jost, Weissburgunder, Mittelrhein, Rheingau, Germany, 2021

91
As you'd expect given the Rheingau location, this family estate focuses mainly on Riesling, but also has plantings of Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), new to the Wine Society in this 2021 bottling. It's a lovely vintage, fresh and with good acidity (the 2022 is apparently rounder in character). There's 7.9g/L residual sugar, but it's in perfect balance – this is all about weight of fruit, apple and lemon, with a hint of spice. Clean, juicy and with lovely freshness – easy to enjoy with or without food.

Aromo, Viognier, Maule Valley, Chile, 2022

90
This well made unoaked Viognier has plenty of varietal typicity for the price. Delicate peach and pear aromas pave the way for a medium-bodid plate, layered with stone fruit, citrus, floral notes and a chalky minerality. Super concentration and freshness here, with mouthwatering acidity. Great value for money.

Simpsons, Gravel Castle Chardonnay, England, United Kingdom, 2022

90
The fifth vintage of this unoaked Chardonnay from Simpsons' Kent vineyards. It's one for those who like their Chardonnay taut, tangy and mouthwatering rather than creamy and fat. You'll find lively lemon citrus and melon fruit, balanced by some weight from malolactic fermentation and time on lees. Fresh, high acidity style, with good length.

Piona, Bricco delle Farfalle, Gavi di Gavi, Piedmont, Italy, 2021

An intense nose of slightly funky peach skin leads to a core of stony acidity and a peachy flavour, with a dried lemon peel note. Toasty apple and lemon emerge on the finish along with some spice.

Sainsbury's, Taste the Difference Discovery Collection South African Field Blend, Paarl, South Africa, 2022

89
Another new white in Sainsbury's Discovery Collection for spring 2023, this enjoyable field blend from Paarl is mostly old bush vine Chenin Blanc, with 3% Grenache Blanc and 1% Marsanne. There's real depth of flavour on the honeyed palate, which is layered with fresh citrus and stone fruits, herbs and juicy peach, balanced by crisp acidity.

Thymiopoulos, Rosé de Xinomavro, Naoussa, Macedonia, Greece, 2022

93
In its dark bottle, this serious rosé is built to age and looks forward to an era of Greek wine production where rosé rivals reds and whites for flagship status. Lovely flecks of bronze in the glass, and the aromas reward decanting with savoury framing around some exotic splendour along the lines of gingery spice and papaya. A few months in oak bolster depth and savoury resonance alongside fresher notes that pop like dots of red apple and tiny raspberry pips. After an hour it opens into orange peel and rose nuances underpinned by lavish intensity, which makes it a fabulous choice for the finest banquet of crab or lobster. Farmed organically, using biodynamic practices.

Hampton Water, Languedoc-Roussillon, France, 2022

90
A joint-project between Languedoc wine maestro, Gerard Bertrand and Jon Bon Jovi and his son, Jesse, this rosé is inspired by those of Provence but has its own identity. Ripe, fresh cherry and strawberry fruit aromas are joined by a herbal touch, while in the mouth it's impressively sapid and mineral. Flavours of strawberry and herbs lead the way, with some peppery spice emerging on the fresh finish.

Perfumed white fruits, ripe peach and rose water on the nose with a touch of citrus. Bitter grapefruit zest and juicy red cherry on the textured palate, seasoned with white pepper spices and crisp minerality. A refined summer rosé from a classic region, produced by the Negrel family, which has been running the Mas de Cadenet Estate since 1813.

Vale de Pios, Excomungado, Douro Valley, Portugal, 2018

93
Crafted by architect-turned-winemaker Joaquim Almeida, this Douro red’s chiselled minerality and transparency of fruit reflects his hands-off approach and lets the local varieties and schist soils speak for themselves. Aged for four years in stainless steel and 12 months in bottle (no oak!), the tannins are soft and poised, supporting the plum, red cherry and blood orange flavours with ease. Simply delicious.

Famille Bougrier, Les Terrasses St Nicolas de Bourgueil, Loire, France, 2022

92

Loved this new addition to the Tesco line-up, great value. A perfect red for summer drinking, this is 100% Cabernet Franc. There's a slight purple tinge in the glass, and then a waft of raspberry and summer fruit when you swirl. It's not all about fruit though – Cabernet Franc often displays a crunchy, peppery, leafy note, and you find that here, keeping it fresh and lively. The perfect summer mouthful, and just 12.5% alcohol. You could chill it slightly – just 15 minutes in the fridge – to make it even more refreshing on a warm day. Would be lovely with charcuterie.

Asda, Pepperjack Shiraz, Barossa, South Australia, Australia, 2020

Barossa no longer equates to huge sticky black-fruited alcohol bombs, and this example proves that. Ripe blackcurrant and some balsamic freshness give way to a peppery, plummy finish with gum-tingling acidity and subtle tannins.

A smoky edge gives this Greek red ('Black of Kalavryta') a Burgundian touch, while a subtle zestiness adds freshness and drive. Tobacco leaf, cocoa nibs and blood orange line a core of intense dried cranberries and plums. Has a delicious lingering spiciness.

CVNE, Cune Mencía, Valdeorras, Spain, 2022

89
Best known for its Riojas, CVNE has headed to Valdeorras to make this juicy, young, unoaked Mencía. Vibrant cherries and ripe red berries on the nose and palate, where soft tannins are paired with good acidity. A hint of smoky bacon on the finish, plus a bitter chicory note to balance the ripeness. An easydrinking crowd-pleaser for summer barbecues.

This Malbec from Patagonia is full of typical varietal aromas and flavours: ripe black fruits, chocolate, and violet overtones. It's intense and focused, with good acidity and balsamic freshness enlivening the sticky red and black fruits. It's pretty simple, but very drinkable, with a sweet and creamy finish.

It's helpful when the two grape varieties that comprise the wine's name describe its taste. Delicate orange blossom, juicy grapiness, ripe apricot and runny honey aromas and flavours with a clean finish and fresh acidity, from a winery founded in 1889.
