So you’re throwing a party. Of course you are. It’s that time of year, after all. And you’ll need to get the drinks organised. You enjoy a decent bottle of wine, and know a fair bit about it. You wouldn’t be reading this otherwise. So whatever other options you’re considering for the lo-no/designated driver/cocktails/craft beer crowd, the wine is likely to be your responsibility (and let’s face it, who needs an excuse to go out and buy lots of nice wine?).

So here are a few suggestions, pulled together by the party-loving Decanter team – all wines we’ve run across at recent tastings, which we’d serve at our own parties. They’re all affordable at £20 or under, and should be fairly easy to find.

Decanter Premium: The perfect gift for a special wine lover

Pitching it right

But to start, a few hints on party etiquette. No, not ‘don’t do that dance with the lampshade on your head again’, though that’s useful to keep in mind.

First, think of your guests. If your social circle is anything like ours, there will be a few knowledgeable wine enthusiasts, a few who are interested but less educated, some who like what they know and know what they like, and the inevitable smattering of those who might accidentally take a swig from a nearby vase of flowers without noticing the difference.

So it’s not an occasion to go overboard on the fine wines. That bottle of 1982 Mouton Rothschild can stay securely locked away in the cellar.

Your choice should be reasonably mainstream, too; the ‘interesting’ natural wine that smells of overripe barnyard, the headache-inducing 16.5% abv red and the semi-sweet curiosity from the East of Azerbaijan are probably treats for another time. You don’t have to stick to supermarket standards and well-known labels, but the reaction you’re aiming for is ‘this is nice, what is it?’, not ‘what on Earth is this?’.

Also think about food. Or rather, don’t. You’re looking for wines that will work on their own, or with a wide variety of flavours if you’re serving snacks and canapés. Something that only works well with cheese or fish is way too specialised.

And then there’s the season to consider. It’s winter, so you could happily lean towards more robust wines – though easy-drinking lighter whites are a perennial standby, and pale rosé has escaped its summer-only designation to be a year-round favourite.

And the last hint? Don’t take it all too seriously. While you may be very proud of your carefully chosen selection, this is clearly a time to wear your knowledge lightly – after all, a party is all about conversations and connections, and the wine should be an accompaniment (even better, enhancement) to that rather than the main event. But what if anybody refuses your wine and insists on drinking that bottle of £4.99 plonk they brought with them? Well, you know where the door is.

Domaine J Laurens, Les Graimenous, Crémant de Limoux, Languedoc-Roussillon, France, 2021

My wines

Ripe peach, Bramley apple and yellow plums express themselves fully on the nose, the energetic bubbles creating a vortex of orchard fruit aromas. There’s a roundness and weight in the mouth, a creamy ripeness, some crème patissière and honeysuckle characters. Light bitter lemon rind spears through the finish and the full foamy mousse.

It may be non-vintage, but this Champagne from Lidl’s core range is incredible value at £15. A blend of 40% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 25% Meunier, it has real depth and complexity for the price, with a purity of red berry fruit and creamy, toasty undertones. Perfect for a party where you particularly want Champagne rather than an alternative.

Vintage fizz is a decadent way to welcome your party guests, but if Champagne blows your budget, try this reliably good Cava. A blend of the classic Cava grapes Xarel.lo, Macabeo and Parellada, it’s aged for 18 months, giving toasty depth to the nose and palate. Rounded creamy palate with honeyed tones, crisp lemon citrus, fresh pineapple and roasted nuts, with tiny, persistent bubbles.

Achard-Vincent, Tradition, Clairette de Die, Rhône, France

My wines

A crowd-pleasing biodynamic addition to a celebration. Naturally sweet, delicately fizzy and low in alcohol with delicate aromas of rose petals, Mirabelle plum and yellow apple. These are followed by a surprisingly nuanced palate, with a cider-like savouriness adding crunchy freshness. A perfect aperitif and companion to cheese and charcuterie platters, smoked fish or sausage rolls. Dangerously drinkable.

This organic, vegan-friendly Prosecco is delightfully fresh, with a vibrant and saline core of appley fruit. As an extra-dry style it’s got some residual sugar, which helps it to work really well with a range of aperitifs. On offer for £9.99 at time of writing.

Vergelegen, Estate Reserve Chardonnay, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2021

My wines

92

A classy, polished winter white laden with creamy butterscotch notes, spiced apples, pops of citrus and a lingering flinty bite. An ideal choice for that party guest who prefers a white Burgundy to a Chablis, but it will also stand proud alongside any festive feast thanks to its cleansing acidity and structured but not overt oak. From one of the Cape’s most recognisable wine estates, it punches well above its weight for the price. Vegan.

Creamy citrus, pear drops and mango on the nose, with a touch of honey. Saline and textured on the palate, showcasing lovely concentration of mango peel, grapefruit and hints of sweet spices. Produced by Piersanti, a family winery founded in 1955 by Giovanni Piersanti and his children, Silveria and Carlo. Today it's managed by Carlo's sons Giuliano and Ottavio.

Put down the Pinot Grigio! This characterful Portuguese grape found its way to South Africa four decades ago and its heritage vines now deliver concentrated, mouthfilling flavours of yellow apples, lemongrass tea and smoky manuka honey. One of the best of Aldi’s new range when the 2022 vintage was introduced – this 2023 should be hitting shelves soon, complete with a cute label that will stand out in the ice bucket.

The Verdeca grape is native to the Puglia region of Italy. This stainless steel-vinified example is full of lemon peel and lemon leaf scents, pithy and ever so slightly creamy, with a touch of ripe nectarine. There's some creaminess in the mouth too, with beautifully refreshing acidity which cleanses and makes way for apple, pear, lemon peel and white peach flavours, with some sage emerging on the finish. Very versatile.

Sainsbury's, Taste the Difference Western Australian Sauvignon Blanc, Western Australia, Australia, 2022

My wines

Former Cloudy Bay winemaker David Hohnen helped to put Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc on the map, so he certainly knows his stuff when it comes to this grape variety. New to the Sainsbury's range and brilliant value for money, this Western Australian wine includes 14% of Semillon in the blend, which adds texture and complexity. Grassy lemon and line aromas on the nose, followed by a clean, crisp palate that blends minerality with creaminess, lots of refreshing citrus, grassy notes; bright grapefruit and lime peel on the finish.

Cramele Recas, Orange Wine, Romania, Romania, 2022

My wines

This highly approachable orange wine is a mish-mash of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling, made with no added yeasts, sulphur or sugar. It’s highly fragrant and a mid-burnished gold in colour from 3.5 weeks’ maceration on skins. Perfect for the time of year, you’ll find aromas and flavours of quince, apricot and orange peel with a hint of vanilla and spice. Positively festive.

Nibiru, Grundstein Rosé, Kamptal, Niederösterreich, Austria, 2022

My wines

92

Electric pink in colour, this explodes from the glass with bright aromas of sweet red berries, raspberry coulis, cherry pie and strawberry fruit pastilles. Sumptuous and sensual in the mouth, with a fairly weighty body and texture, the flavours take on orange rind and rocky depth. The finish goes on and on, bringing to mind huge punnets of plump strawberries glinting in the summer sun. It finishes dry with a welcome bitter nut skin note, and there's a textural grip that brings needed structure and freshness. Very easy to drink. Unfiltered so it’s a touch cloudy, intense in flavour and not shy in character. A showstopper party wine.

Ponce, Clos Lojen Bobal, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, 2022

My wines

From a single vineyard of old-vine Bobal, this offers so much wine for your money. Bright, vibrant, fruity aromas pop from the glass: glistening cherries and little redcurrants, while the palate shows a darker side to the fruit. Blackberries, spiced plums, cocoa powder and dark chocolate characters are lifted by a sprig of freshly picked mint. Such a drinkable wine that’s also delicate and refined.

Château des Demoiselles, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France, 2018

My wines

Fleshy and ripe but so juicy and alive, the acidity and strawberry character of the fruit creates a lively, bright expression. Fruit on the palate is concentrated on the dark, riper spectrum; plum, date and blackcurrant with soft liquorice undertones, but it all really works together. A deep, seductive style that is balanced, smooth and determined. A classic easy-drinking claret with lovely mentholated finish.

This stood out at The Wine Society’s tasting showcasing its Australian growers, for the incredible value on offer. Made by respected producer Yalumba from Coonawarra and Barossa fruit, it’s full-bodied and yet fresh, bursting with blackcurrant fruit and notes of menthol and eucalyptus. A surprising level of concentration and complexity for the price.

Morrisons, Cidade Branca, Alentejo, Portugal, 2021

An exotic, charming red blend of Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional and Aragones (Tempranillo). Thyme and rose potpourri on the nose, with an undertone of blackcurrant and blueberry. Ripe blackberry and stewed strawberry flavours are seasoned with dark spices. A touch of sweetness on the palate is offset by decent freshness. Balanced and long.

A good value blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano from organic vines, aged for 10 months in barrels with American staves and French tops. Savoury nose of stewed plums, dark cherries and herbs. The popular Bread & Butter range from California was previously a Majestic exclusive, but is now available in Sainsbury's. Château Penin, Grande Selection, Bordeaux, France, 2019

My wines

Fleshy and fruity on the nose; smoked toast, black pepper and black cherries – super lively giving such nuance aromatically. Smooth and clean, crisp with bite but also really lovely chalky but fine tannins that give body and frame to the fresh red and black berry fruit. Lots of liquorice spice on the palate that settles around the edges, but this feels well made with lots to like. Give it at least an hour in a decanter. Easy drinking with balance and finesse. Made by fifth generation winemaker Patrick Carteyron from a selection of 15 hectares of his best terroirs of old-vine Merlot, aged one year in oak barrels. Enjoy with Sunday roast beef.

Rich and dark-fruited, with aromas of spiced plums and dried herbs sprinkled onto blackberries, this full-bodied red is made from the Saperavi variety, native to Georgia. A few years of bottle age have lent some earthy characters to the wine, and the structured tannins are well integrated. Toasty, spicy notes from 12 months in French and American oak pervade through the finish.

Couleurs d'Aquitaine, Bergerac Eglise Saint Jacques NV, Bergerac, Southwest France, France

My wines

New to Tesco, this is a fairly simple wine, but it's incredible value, and would be an excellent party option. It's a Bordeaux blend (mainly Merlot, with Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc), but from the neighbouring Bergerac region, made by one of the largest producers in southwest France. It's a blend of vintages, vinified in stainless steel, which helps to keep the price down. It's sweetly fruited, fresh, brambly forest fruits, charming, approachable and uncomplicated, and made for drinking in its youth. A steal at the price.

Seifried, Sweet Agnes Riesling, Nelson, New Zealand, 2019

My wines

This late-harvest Riesling is the perfect little bottle to pass around. Unctuous yet zingy lime marmalade, lemon bonbons and dried mango notes fill the glass, and there’s enough vibrant acidity to cut through the richness of both the wine and any food accompaniment. Made by the same family for 47 years, with each vintage winning a slew of medals and trophies, it’s a deliciously delectable drop. Vegan.
