Beychevelle and Cantemerle release
- Thursday 19 May 2011
The en primeur campaign picked up steam today as Chateau Beychevelle and Chateau Cantermerle released their 2010 prices.
Beychevelle, a fourth-growth, is up 23% on its 2009 price, at €54 from negociants.
Most observers ascribed this to the fact that Beychevelle is much in demand in China.
Fifth-growth Chateau Cantemerle is up 5.5% on its 2009 price at €21 ex-negociant.
One Bordeaux negociant, who did not wish to be named, told Decanter.com, ‘Beychevelle has already pretty much sold through, because of expected demand from Asia. But this will not be true for every high-profile wine, even though they will all want to follow suit with prices.
‘The reality is that chateaux who raise their prices too much are formally signaling that they no longer care about traditional markets.’
- While high-profile price releases signal a change in gear for the en primeur campaign, one senior Bordeaux official told Decanter.com it was likely the blue-chip wines – First Growths and their siblings – would not release their prices until after the Vinexpo trade fair in mid-June.

I was wondering if you ever considered changing the page layout of your site?
Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people
could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only
having one or 2 images. Maybe you could space it out better?

Unfortunately this escalation in prices started with the 1990 vintage. I have not purchased much Bordeaux since then, and my last purchase of a First Growths was the 1989 vintage.

I wouldn't buy Beychevelle at over £250, the wine just isn't that good.

Actually, there are quite many billionaires and millionaires in Asia - and increasing. So is the upper middle class, who may not be billionaires, but who has money to spend, and who know what is prestigeous to spend on while evolving their true palates. To those hoping the "Asian invasion" is merely a bubble, Im afraid you are in for a huge disappoinment. Its a lot of people constantly getting a lot more money to spend while the top tier wines are -unfortunately- a finite quantity.
