Seeking out good white Burgundy under £10 can often be a thankless task,
so finding a brilliant one at well under this price is cause for considerable celebration. There were no other contenders for this Trophy, yet one suspects that this wine would have seen off all-comers anyway. The co-operative Cave de Lugny, just north of Mâcon, is Burgundy’s largest. Founded in 1927, it now produces more than six million bottles of wine annually, from some 1,450 hectares in the Mâconnais. It is best known for its beautifully vinified, and satisfyingly consistent, oak-free whites. At the topof the range is the widely available Les Charmes, Mâcon-Lugny – a 105ha monopoly which, year in, year out, produces reliably pure, elegant and fruity Chardonnay.
