If you love Nebbiolo then getting onboard with the Barolo 2016 vintage is a must.
The best examples can be expensive and many have sold out, however we have scoured the market to highlight eight great examples that you can still buy, and all for £50 or less – with the exception of one wine priced at £52 that we felt deserved inclusion.
Ageability
As Stephen Brook noted in his original report on Barolo 2016; ‘There is no reason to doubt that these wines will age very well. They don’t, I would guess, demand further bottle age in the way that more tannic vintages such as 2006 did.
‘In the past, ferocious tannin levels and astringency meant that many Nebbiolos from top producers had to be cellared in order to become pleasurable. Advances in farming and vinification mean that most wines are accessible at a much younger age these days.
‘But every one of these wines will benefit from a further five years in bottle and it would be a shame to drink the best wines now – their balance, acidity and structure should ensure a long life.’
Value for money
Many of the best value Barolo 2016 wines are ‘classico’ bottlings – that is, wines that are made from a blend of different vineyards. These often represent a ‘house style’ and are at the most affordable end of a producer’s range as typically volumes are much higher than for single-vineyard bottlings.
Michaela Morris commented in her 2016 late releases report that; ‘There is an enormous range of prices and stylistic interpretations of wines that are labelled without an MGA. Some aren’t even from multiple sites at all, they simply refrain from declaring the MGA for various reasons.

‘Furthermore, Baroli that do blend several MGAs are not necessarily inferior to their cru counterparts – some are among the greatest wines of Barolo.
‘Finally, many represent tremendous value for money, especially in a vintage such as 2016.’
