The less impressive examples are more typically due to clumsy handling – over-extraction, over-oaking or excessive reduction.
Bastien Jolivet, who has vineyards in the central part of St-Joseph, says he witnessed a gradual ripening with no blockages, thanks to a succession of small showers of around 10mm during the summer.
He believes the reds will last longer than the 2015s and the 2018s.

Domaine Gonon, Les Oliviers, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

Vibrant nectarine notes on the nose, you just know this is going to have some tangy acidity on the palate even before you taste it. Medium-bodied, not quite so opulent this year, a touch of citrus flavour and snappy, citrusy acidity. Rich mango on the palate, it's mineral and long, with great cut and precision. There is a touch of glycerol roundness on the finish. Great balance here this year. Fermented in fûts and old barriques, it also spends a year on the lees.

Domaine Bernard Gripa, Le Berceau, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

A little honeycomb oak on the nose, the palate is broad but not overly fat. There's a good sense of intensity and energy in the glass and this finishes long, with well-integrated oak. Classic Saint-Joseph in a fresh style, showing mouthwatering salinity. An exceptional wine. Hand-harvested old vine Marsanne grown on granite. Fermented in 228-litre oak barriques then left on fine lees until the malolactic is finished. 4,000 bottles made.

M Chapoutier, Les Granits Blanc, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

A relatively brisk and fresh style of Les Granits this year, well balanced, with an upright mineral spine. The acidity is spot-on, giving the wine edge and length. Oak is well judged, and doesn't occlude the fruit. A little less fat and ripeness than some recent years, but has a good sense of intensity if not generosity - you really feel the granite in the granular, slightly serrated mouthfeel. A return to a more classic, measured style this year.

Vignobles Chirat, Chays d'Oeuvre, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

Pear and honeysuckle, the Roussanne really stands out in the blend. Rich, gently oily in texture, this has more intensity and concentration than most this year and a firm beam of acidity. Very long, revealing Macadamia nut on the finish. A white Saint-Joseph for the dinner table. Ten months spent in a variety of sizes of oak barrel, 20% new. Malolactic was blocked.

Domaine Coursodon, Paradis Saint Pierre, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

A rounded, concentrated and pleasingly ripe style of white Saint-Joseph. This has a gently oily texture, the alcohol is a little raised, but it's a very flamboyant and eye-catching wine. The oak is plentiful and it works well, while the finish is long. Old vines on granite, south-south-east-facing slopes. Malolactic was completed, with weekly battonage.

Domaine Faury, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

Musky lime on the nose. Middleweight style, this is fresh and precise with good acidity. Vibrant and zesty on the finish, making for a bright and refreshing style, but still with plenty of substance.

E Guigal, Lieu-dit Saint-Joseph, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

Intense, tangy pear and almond nougat, preserved lemon and oak spice. Full-bodied but not as massive as some years, this is very well-balanced, the oak riding in with a toasty fanfare on the finish. Guigal has 5.5ha of this lieu-dit, 2.5ha of which are white varieties and these are planted at the top of the hill. Aged in oak barriques, 50% new, 50% one-year-old. Picked before the Viognier this year.

Ferraton Père & Fils, Les Oliviers, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

The oak component is quite pronounced at this stage, but should settle in time and is nicely integrated on the palate. The acidity is well-balanced, there's salty extract and intensity, finishing long. A more ambitious style of white Saint-Joseph, but has the characteristic freshness of the vintage. Aged in barriques and demi-muids, 30% new.

Martine & Christian Rouchier, La Chave, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

Gorgeous lifted fragrance, at once peppery and floral. Bay leaf aromas from the stems. The fullest in body of Domaine Rouchier’s reds, but still only medium-bodied. Lightly grippy tannins provide some good textural matter on the palate. Not hugely concentrated or powerful, it’s juicy yet savoury. Expressive, and aromatically abundant.

M Chapoutier, Le Clos, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

Dense black fruit overlaid with violets - very much in the Mauves style of Saint-Joseph. Peppery and spicy. Full-bodied without heaviness, this feels dense but not overly thick. Tannins are chalky but melting, like 100% pure cocoa. The oak is a little more pronounced than with Les Granits, but it's well integrated. Lifted finish. There's intense concentration and deep, dark tannins, but it's all very well balanced. May prove to be the vintage yet of Le Clos.

Domaine Faury, La Gloriette, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

Not as explosively aromatic as Faury's Hedonism cuvée, this has a deep aromatic presence that's more herbal and smoky, with lifted violets and smoky bacon. Medium-bodied, with super smooth tannins that coat the palate. Perfectly balanced acidity and just slightly warming alcohol. An exquisite Saint-Joseph. Tasted non-blind.

Domaine JL Chave, Clos Florentin, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

Le Clos exhibits its usual exceptional balance this year: it's very ripe in fruit but slender on the palate, with tannins like 100% cacao. Bright, firm acids bring a perfect sense of balance. A panther of a wine.

Domaine Faury, Hedonism, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

I love the nose! It bursts out of the glass, so distinctive, so complex - tangy blackberry, juniper, burnt herbs and pine resin. Only light-bodied, but great impact and intensity, pinpoint acidity, tight, textural tannins that provide plenty of grip. Explosively aromatic, so lip-smackingly delicious that it puts many a Côte-Rôtie to shame. From the northern part of the appellation, with a large proportion of whole bunch. Tasted non-blind.

Xavier Gérard, Le Blanchard, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

Fresh oregano, then deep blackberry fruit on the palate. There's a deep menthol side to the wine, focused acidity and great freshness. The alcohol is gently warming on the long, saline finish. This is excellent - lean and defined, but so vibrant and intense. Le Blanchard is a small vineyard in Chavanay Tasted non-blind.

Domaine Guy Farge, Passion de Terrasses, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

A savoury, mouthwatering aromatic expression of bay leaves and juniper berries ground into smoked sausage. Medium weight, this is an appetising style with perfectly balanced acidity and tannins that really take root on your tongue. Long, textural, dry finish. Excellent. From 100-year-old vines with no destemming.

Domaine JL Chave, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

All the lieux-dits I tasted that make up this domaine's Saint-Joseph were showing well and expressed their typical characters, this promising to be a precise style with clear, complex aromatics. It's possible that the rose-scented lieu-dit Bachesson component might be bottled separately this year - in which case you should buy it without hesitation.

Domaine du Monteillet, Cuvée de Papy, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

Light-bodied, but so fresh and perky. Intense violets, a touch of liquorice, all carried by oak spice on very fine tannins. Old vine Syrah grown on muscovite granite in Chavanay, with 20% whole bunch, four weeks maceration and a submerged cap. Aged in demi-muids, 30% new oak.

Domaine Gonon, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

A classic expression of Saint-Joseph - fruit melded with black olive - this has body but is light in tannin, while the acidity is low but balanced. An elegant, juicy, very drinkable vintage with moderate alcohol, lower than the 2019. The wine had just been transferred to tank post-élevage at the time of tasting, so was showing quite closed; it may well improve and show better after bottling.

Domaine Guy Farge, Terroir de Granit, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

Smoky bacon notes on the nose, this is medium-bodied, with expressive, juicy ripe fruit, a savoury slant and no excess sweetness, plus a supporting beam of acidity. Plenty of aroma, structure and local character, this is very good indeed. From 60-year-old vines grown on granite with a large proportion of whole bunch. Good value for a serious Northern Rhône red.

Domaine Laurent Habrard, Sainte Épine, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

Fresh, herbal nose, neither overly ripe nor extracted. Extremely drinkable, with intense, gently grainy tannins, this has plenty of intensity, energy and texture. It feels alive. From a south-facing parcel of lieu-dit Sainte-Epine on decomposed granite, all bunches were destemmed and the wine was aged for a year in barriques.

Emmanuel Darnaud, Lieu-dit La Dardouille, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

Lovely authentic fruit, there's a touch of maltiness in with the blackberry and blackcurrant. Medium-bodied, fresh and aerial in style, with no excess weight or extraction. Grainy, fibrous tannins and a peppering of dried herbs over the top, this is savoury and textural. From a parcel of 40-80-year-old vines at the southern limit of Tournon, grown on granite. 80% destemmed, aged in barriques and demi-muids.

Vignobles Chirat, Soliste, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2020

A fairly rich, ripe style of St-Joseph, and one with good freshness. Black olive, a touch of rosemary but no strong whole-bunch aroma. Medium- to full-bodied with good weight of fruit. Lovely succulent tannins with a touch of sweetness from the oak. Grown on granite soils, some vines are in Serrières and some in Chavanay, both south facing. 100% whole bunch, submerged cap for 20 days. Matured for 18 months, of which 12 months was in 500-litre barrels, 20% new, then it was transferred into old barrels.
