The 2022 growing season in Gevrey-Chambertin and the northern Côte de Nuits was, as elsewhere, hot and dry. Results generally were superb, particularly among growers who effectively dealt with the effects of the sun and drought.
The wines reflect their terroir very well – most have a characteristic Gevrey tannic line, compact structure, and fresh, lingering finish. The wines showed very well out of barrel, but the best of the grand crus (particularly Chambertin, Clos de Bèze, Latricières, and Mazoyères from top producers) will likely close down for at least five to seven years.
Those below the Route des Grands Crus (Charmes, Griottes, and Chapelle especially) should open sooner. Expect to wait three to five years at least for the best premier crus, and even the village wines will be better with some time in bottle.
The focal point of the season for some Gevrey growers was the torrential rainstorm that began on Tuesday, 21 June, turning the streets of Gevrey into rivers. The rain continued throughout that week in Burgundy. In the context of the otherwise hot and dry season, the storms were essential, but in Gevrey, it was almost too much, too fast; although most growers said that the worst of the effects were reasonably localised.
Producers such as Cyrielle Rousseau and Nicolas Rossignol pinpoint the damage as the vineyards near the Combe Lavaux, while those in more protected areas were spared the worst flooding.
Growers in other parts of the northern Côte de Nuits reported similar conditions. Amelie Berthaut, for example, said that her vines in Fixin were damaged by hail, while growers such as Bruno Clair in Marsannay did not report the same damage.
Picking times also varied in the northern Côte de Nuits. Nicolas Rossignol of Rossignol-Trapet began harvesting on 8 September. ‘We needed time to have good maturity, so we waited for our grapes,’ he said.

Despite waiting, he did not report shrivelled grapes or over-ripe conditions and said that potential alcohol ranged from 12.6%-13.2% with moderate yields due to work in the vineyard. Loïc Dugat-Py also reported moderate yields but started much earlier, picking in Gevrey on 26 August to retain freshness. Both domaines produced delicious wines. As long as growers controlled yield and prevented sunburn, the opportunity to make superb wine was there in Gevrey-Chambertin.
