The archetypical Meursault is ripe, almost honeyed, with notes of butter and a nutty quality. Lovers of this style of Meursault will not be disappointed by the 2022 vintage.
Because the flavour profile of Meursault is so often rich, it is imperative to keep as much freshness as possible in the wines in a sunny, hot year such as 2022. The best growers picked their harvest date carefully to make this happen. Guillaume Lavollée at Génot-Boulanger said: ‘We’d rather pick too early than too late.’
His work has paid off, with potential alcohols for most cuvées between 12.5% and 13%. The worst impact from the heat in the Côte d’Or was on the hillside vineyards in Puligny. However, the drought conditions were more severe in the Côte Chalonnaise, where they picked first.
In the end, they enjoyed ‘correct’ acidity levels, which is encouraging in the context of the year. Summing up his thoughts, Lavollée said it as, ‘a beautiful year for both reds and whites.’
There was a lot of activity at Domaine Henri Boillot in Meursault, since it was the first year of Guillaume Boillot’s négociant project with his wife Camille. He remarked: ‘We started to pick on 27 August – after everyone’, yet his results are superb and do not lack freshness.
Pierre Lafon began picking on 20 August – among the earliest – to keep the wines crisp. He has succeeded admirably, reining in alcohol at 13%. They finished picking by 2 September, and the result is admirably chiselled and compact.
Look for particularly successful wines from high-elevation Blagny and from the village-level Les Clous and Les Vireuils that may outperform their more renowned neighbours further down the slope. These wines ripened well in 2022 but retain a refreshing structure, although exceptional wines were made throughout the village.
