Look out for appellation overviews for:
St-Estèphe, Pauillac, Margaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc, Listrac, Moulis and Pessac-Léognan & Graves
Consistently impressive, the Bordeaux 2018 vintage really is a year that St-Julien showed its class.
Things were very dry, with a 75mm deficit of rain during the growing season overall. This meant that berries were harvested as some of the smallest sizes and weights on record, right down to 0.7g at Ducru Beaucaillou.
Those high alcohols that are a feature of Bordeaux 2018 wines are found again here, with highest ever found at Lagrange, Beychevelle and Léoville Las Cases.
Even so, the balance of the appellation has been maintained, and although the second wines are less consistent than the main estate wines, there are some good showings here also compared to many other appellations.
Top names to look out for:
- Château Ducru Beaucaillou
- Château Léoville Las Cases
- Château Talbot
- Château Lagrange
Value pick:
Le Petit Ducru (previously Lalande-Borie)
