The northern Rhône produces just 5% of the total volume made in the broader Rhône Valley growing area. As demand for these wines increases, it’s not surprising to see prices ticking up. But it’s still possible to find some excellent wines retailing under £30 a bottle in the UK.

White northern Rhône falls into two distinct stylistic camps: pure Viognier on the one hand, and wines made from Marsanne and/or Roussanne on the other. I tasted these two styles separately, from youngest to oldest.

To provide as many recommendations as possible, I included all the major northern crus, as well as wines from IGP Collines Rhodaniennes and even AP Côtes-du-Rhône and Vin de France, as long as they were grown in the northern Rhône. All wines were tasted blind.

Even though the wines I tasted represent some of the cheapest northern Rhône whites on the UK market, they showed remarkably well – the standard of winemaking is consistently high here, and there were no poor-quality wines.

A couple of the cheapest Marsannes weren’t terribly exciting, but there were four wines under £20 that scored 90 points or above. It’s a style of wine you can buy with a degree of confidence.

Coming soon: 34 northern Rhône reds under £30

The strongest showing came from St-Joseph, but there were very good wines from all appellations. The two stand-out wines were Domaine Lionel Faury’s deliciously hedonistic St-Joseph Blanc 2019 and Domaine Laurent Fayolle’s precise and focussed Crozes-Hermitage Blanc Les Pontaix 2020.

The IGP and Vin de France wines were mixed in quality, but there are some very good Marsannes and Roussannes in these categories, so don’t write them off. And without including IGP and Vin de France, there would have been no Viogniers at all – finding a Condrieu for under £30 is impossible.

But Condrieu lovers on a budget should certainly consider some of the IGPs and Vin de France Viogniers produced by the best estates – the quality can be excellent. The Domaine François Merlin, Brocéliande Viognier 2020 must be one of the most expensive IGPs on the market at £27, but compared to many Condrieus, it offers good value for money.

Vintages

The northern Rhône has enjoyed three interesting vintages in a row for white wines. The 2021 vintage is fresh and zesty in style, with good acidity. The 2020s are a little fuller, well balanced and consistently good. The hot 2019 vintage produced a crop of full-bodied, powerful whites that are even richer than usual, but those that managed to find a good balance are irresistible.

None of these wines need to be kept any longer before opening – they are all ready to drink now. Nor will any of them improve greatly from longer cellaring. The 2021s and 2020s will be good throughout 2023, and many will hold until 2024. The 2019s should all be drunk over this year and next.

I love the nose on this, it's complex with a fragrant sandalwood and cedar note that goes deep into the palate, lingering and showing honeyed tones. 2019 was a hot vintage, and this wine reflects that, despite being grown in the most northerly vineyards of St-Joseph. The acidity is on the low side, making for a very deep, rich and flavoursome style of northern Rhône white.

Almond, pear and white flowers on the nose, this is a very classic and appealing white northern Rhône. Silky, full-bodied but not fat. There’s lovely texture, good tension, and it’s gently creamy. The acidity isn't high but it feels well balanced, and there's a tapered, lingering finish. Expert winemaking, very well judged and subtle use of oak. An exceptional white Crozes-Hermitage.

Distinctly perfumed, there's a touch of violet and honeysuckle on the nose. Powerfully flavoured, the oak is rich, bringing double cream, tobacco and an opulent, slightly oily mouthfeel. This is very rich and ripe, with gently warming alcohol - a common theme among 2019 whites. It needs drinking now, but delivers a lot of pleasure and a long finish.

A subtle perfumed note is embedded in the pear and apricot fruit. It’s full-bodied and fairly rich, towards opulence on the palate, with ripe, fresh pear notes on the finish. The acidity is fairly low, making for a rich mouthful, but it has a fresh feel in the mouth. Touch of nuttiness on the finish. Grown on granite soils, aged for nine months in oak barrels before release.

Gorgeous fresh, floral notes on the nose, with touches of honey. Full-bodied, rich and complex on the palate. Good acidity, there's real depth and interest here. Certainly ready to drink, this is lovely. The alcohol is just a touch on the high side, as is fairly common among 2019 whites, but this is nonetheless very enjoyable. A proportion is aged in oak with regular lees stirring.

Subtle pear notes, this has a good sense of freshness and tension. Very much about the texture and vibrancy, as the aromatics are discrete. A touch of zesty acidity brings freshness, straightness and drinkability. Good value, and interesting to see a pure northern Rhône Roussanne. Hand harvested, partly grown on granitic soils, partly alluvial. One third aged in foudre, one third in barrique and one third in tank, for seven months on the lees.

An interesting combination of violet and aniseed, with a great sense of aromatic freshness. Light- to medium-bodied, this is very fresh on the palate too. It finishes on white flowers and apricot, and a flinty reductive note. It's an unusual blend for the northern Rhône, but this works well. Drink young. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, the vineyards are near Mauves, just outside of the St-Joseph appellation.

Convincing straight away, this has a sense of richness, but it's restrained too. It feels harmonious, well balanced. The acidity works with the subtle bitter note to bring a good sense of cut. Classic white Crozes-Hermitage from a single vineyard of 40-60-year-old vines.

Apple and pear aromas with a touch of florality. It's full-bodied, rich and silky on the palate, but the acidity is well balanced. There's a good sense of precision here, it's well made; but drink soon. From 25-year-old vines grown on clay, silt, sand and gravel; aged for 12 months partly in barrels before release.

A fairly full-bodied style of white northern Rhône, the oak use is noticeable but not excessive, it adds a toasty note and accentuates its gentle salinity. Generous silkiness on the palate. Enjoyably full and rich. Etienne Pochon has 16ha in Crozes-Hermitage, 12 of which are dedicated to Syrah, the rest to Roussanne and Marsanne.

There's a touch of cream and hazelnut to the pear fruit in this white Crozes. It's full-bodied, powerful, the alcohol feels a little raised, but it has a long finish. Certainly a rich and opulent style, with quite firm bitterness helping to create balance. There's a dab of honey to the subtle pear aromas; quite a discrete nose. Fairly full-bodied, it certainly has the Marsanne breadth on the palate. Finishes quite savoury and dry. Touch of classic Marsanne bitterness on the finish. From 30-year-old vines grown on steep limestone slopes, hand harvested, fermented and briefly matured in stainless steel.

Gorgeous nose, with subtle fresh herbal notes, like dill, along with some polished oak. Full-bodied, rich and opulent, a decidedly oaked style, with notes of caramel and vanilla. Long finish. The oak is really quite generously applied, and at this stage the wine feels very rich. Alcohol is a touch on the high side.

A subtle touch of hazelnut and honeysuckle to the gentle pear fruits. Silky and broad on the tongue, but not terribly full-bodied, it's counteracted by some positive Marsanne bitter notes, but the finish is short. Full-bodied, really intensely flavoured, zesty and intense. There's some citrus peel notes that mingle with the violet and juicy satsuma fruit. Great freshness and intensity, this is a Condrieu in all but name. It has remarkable finesse for an IGP – look beyond this relatively lowly classification, the quality is excellent.

Full-bodied, particularly rich and concentrated for an IGP Viognier. Really powerfully flavoured, with fresh grape, lychee and citrus. The alcohol might be on the high side, but this is long, flavoursome and delicious. Slightly oily texture, not quite as fine as a typical Condrieu but lots of impact and good value.
