Johnny Depp reveals favourite wine

Hollywood star Johnny Depp has revealed his favourite wine.

In an interview with Madame Figaro magazine Depp said that Château Calon-Ségur, a Saint-Estèphe third-growth, was his top tipple.

‘It’s a marvellous wine that you can drink every day and it’s also very affordable,’ he said.

The actor, who reportedly earned €18m (£10m) for his role in last year’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, also revealed that his tastes reached the more expensive end of the fine wine spectrum.

‘I like Pétrus [and] Château Cheval-Blanc,’ he said. He also name checked Domaine de la Romanée-Conti as one of his favourite Burgundy estates.

Enthusing over his selection he said, ‘with those wines, you reach nirvana.’

Depp, who lives with French singer Vanessa Paradis and spends six months a year in France, is known for his love of French wines.

He met fellow oenophile, Liccy Dahl, widow of Roald, in the UK two years ago. Dahl, whose late husband wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory remembers the meeting.

‘He invited me into his trailer for a glass of wine,’ said Dahl. ‘I was astonished to find he had two bottles of Cos d’Estournel sitting on his desk – a 1989 and a 1990.’

Depp also sports a tattoo proclaiming ‘Wino forever’, although the original wording was ‘Winona forever’ – a relic from previous girlfriend, actress Winona Ryder.
