Seven Tuscan wineries are displaying works by international artists as part of a new project designed to bring together wine, travel and art.

Wine and art ‘treasure hunt’

Named ‘The Art of the Treasure Hunt’, the project includes sculptures, installations, photographs and films, all based inside Tuscany wineries.

It has been developed to mark 300 years since the 1716 edict from Cosimo III de’ Medici. That document is considered to have been the first attempt to draw up boundaries for the Chianti wine region.

Kasia Redzisz, who is running the project and is also senior curator at Tate Liverpool in the UK, said, ‘The experience oscillates between the old and the new.

‘They contemplate contemporary art in the shadow of ancient cellars while savouring new [olive] oil and tasting ageing wine.’

The participating wineries are Castello di Ama, Castello di Brolio, Castello di Volpaia, Colle Bereto, Felsina, Gagiole and Borgo San Felice.

The wineries participating are offering a tour and wine tasting as well as the art viewing, for an entry fee.

Giovanna Stianti, from Castello di Volpaia, said the works of art ‘fitted in perfectly in each winery. I really hope this project will go on year after year. It is something fantastic for art-loving public and also for the people that are interested in wine.’

The project is dedicated to the memory of late architect Zaha Hadid, and proceeds will go to Wilson’s Byrd Hoffman Water Mill Foundation, as well as charitable organisations in Florence, São Paulo and the Middle East.
