Welcome to Decanter magazine's June 2026 issue

French discoveries

Leader by Amy Wislocki, Decanter magazine editor

While in Paris recently, attending classes for the Wine Scholar Guild (WSG) Tasting Diploma (more of that in a future issue), I met Chris Howard at one of the socials.

As well as being a WSG editorial advisor, Chris is also a Decanter contributor, and the author of our new series of articles on ‘Forgotten France’.

He brought with him a bottle of the Domaine Giachino Jacquère mentioned in his first article in the series, on Apremont (See contents list below).

There were many flashy, big-name bottles at that social, but this simple white wine lingered in my memory: crisp, alpine, with delicate white floral notes, it was just so deliciously refreshing and drinkable.

In all my years in wine, I don’t remember ever drinking a wine from Apremont, and that’s the aim of this series – to introduce even seasoned wine lovers to something new (even if the wines can, sadly, be hard to track down outside France).

Lastly, I hope many of you will enter our new wine photography competition. We can’t wait to see how you capture the beauty of wine.

Chateau Musar’s winemaker Tarek Sakr flew in to London from Lebanon in May to present the new 2019 vintage red (available via independent merchants, priced £40-£50).

Since 1996, he said, vintage character has alternated between round and sweetly fruited even-numbered years and cooler, more restrained odd years. The 2019 follows the pattern, dark, mineral and youthful with a delicious, cool-climate elegance.
