Coombsville 2019: top Cabernets from this Napa AVA
Coombsville is the youngest of the Napa Valley's AVAs and also one of the coolest. So for wine lovers looking for even more elegance and freshness in their 2019 Cabernets, this is an appellation to seek out.

As well as the youngest (approved in 2011), Coombsville is among the coolest of Napa Valley’s 16 sub-AVAs. And the best Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines in 2019 are bright, elegant and poised, imbued with fine-grained tannins, ample tension and length.

Given the relatively mild season, with only a few days rising above 38℃, a good amount of winter rain along with a shot of spring rain, vineyards were well-prepared for the growing season. This ‘made for grapes with great natural acidity and bright aromatics’ says Andy Erickson of Favia.
Paul Hobbs agrees, noting that ‘after the rare May rainstorm, warm and dry conditions followed, providing an optimal bloom and a compact fruit set. Mild summer temperatures allowed the fruit to ripen slowly, causing phenolics to develop gradually.’
After the record-breaking crop in 2018, Hobbs says 2019 yields ‘were much closer to historical averages’.
