Despite the trials of the growing season, St-Joseph has delivered a surprisingly consistent set of wines.

The reds are light- to medium-bodied, tense and spicy.
I can’t remember the last time I detected so much black pepper in the wines – a welcome effect of cooler conditions.
The tannins in many of the wines are fine and elegant, in contrast to 2022’s beefier wines. Though some are a little weedy, it’s essentially a very drinkable and refreshing vintage thanks in part to low levels of alcohol.
Most will be best drunk young, to enjoy their fragrance and delicacy.
If anything the whites are even better. While the reds are lean and fresh, the whites are relatively rich and opulent. Acidity levels can be on the low side, but most are very enjoyable and speak clearly of their origins.
Jean Gonon, who works organically, says that he had to spray the vines even more in 2024 than 2021, which was notoriously tough and beset with bad weather. But 2024 is a better year.

‘In 2021, it rained and then it was grey,’ he says ‘in 2024, there was brightness between the rains. And the light is important.’

Domaine Gonon, Les Oliviers, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

Lovely fresh, bright aromas, vibrant with notes of honeysuckle. This is a middleweight vintage of this cuvée, with good acidity and a mineral edge. It's well balanced with great harmony and vivaciousness, up there with the best recent vintages of Les Oliviers. From the lieu-dit of the same name near Mauves.

M Chapoutier, Les Granits, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

Floral aromas in a distinctly honeysuckle style, with subtle notes of red apple too. In the mouth it's stony, granitic and mineral, with a lovely fresh cleansing sensation on the tongue. An exceptional vintage. Not as reductive as the past few years, more on the fruit. A must buy. From lieu-dit St-Joseph, east facing.

Domaine Bernard Gripa, Le Berceau, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

A powerful, structured style of white St-Joseph. This has huge intensity, great concentration, searing freshness and nips of citrus-skin bitterness and bright acidity. It has a long saline finish, and will age very well. One of the whites of the vintage for this appellation, no question. Old vines grown on the lieu-dit St-Joseph.

Pierre-Jean Villa, Saut de l'Ange, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

This is a big wine. Powerful, broad, with a gently oily texture. It's loud, fresh, intense and very long. Intense pear, with lychee notes and white flowers and huge length. It really demands food. It's hard to judge how it will age; I would be inclined to drink young, but could surprise with some time in bottle. A rare 100% Roussanne St-Joseph.

Aurélien Chatagnier, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

This smells distinctly autumnal, like quince and straw. It has a broad, powerful palate, rich and ripe and expressive. The finish is long and gently warming. The acidity is low but it has an inner freshness. A detailed example, this has real interest, it's a very authentic white St-Joseph. Granite soils, natural yeast.

Domaine Benoît Roseau, Sur le Quartz, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

A white with a soft and lush texture, like satin. The finish fans out with pear and apple flavour. It feels very authentic and naturally presented. Dried grasses and dried flowers on the finish. From vines situated in St-Désirat, at the centre of the St-Joseph appellation. No added yeast, part matured in stainless steel, part in small barrels.

Domaine Coursodon, Le Paradis Saint-Pierre, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

Aromas of cream soda, vanilla oak and fresh cream, this is a rich style that caresses the palate with its lightly oily textured. It has a powerful finish, the oak and alcohol in balance, and a mineral freshness. Naturally powerful. Old vines on granite, south-southeast-facing slopes. Malo completed, weekly battonage.

E Guigal, Lieu-dit, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

Full, creamy and fat, with lots of oak spice from start to finish. It has good acidity, and a mineral edge, with real freshness and intensity that helps to cut through the rich oak spice and ripe apricot fruit. From coplanted vines in lieu-dit St-Joseph. 50% new oak barriques, 50% one-year-old.

Stéphane Ogier, Le Passage, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

This white is surprisingly rich and powerful, with good acidity and balance. It has real class. Only 3,000 bottles made. Grown on the Chavanay/Malleval border, made from almost entirely Marsanne from two parcels, one young, another around 20 years old.

Cave de Tain, Terre d'Ivoire, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

Smoky on the nose, like gun smoke. A wine that's full-bodied, powerful and fresh. This has citrussy acids that help bring a sense of liveliness to the palate and the finish, which is long. Large proportions, but well balanced. A very good white St-Joseph.

Domaine Jolivet, Clef de Sol, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

Pure mango on the nose, followed by a full-bodied, broad, ripe and unctuous palate. It has a lovely sense of freshness however, and the acidity is just enough to help balance the rich, ripe fruit, ending with a long finish. For lovers of powerful, rich white St-Joseph.

Emmanuel Darnaud, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

A lovely fresh, neat style of St-Joseph, with ripe but compact mango fruit on the mid-palate; good acidity brings balance and neatens it all up. Vibrant, delicious, highly drinkable.

Yves Cuilleron, Lieu-dit Digue, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

Fresh and appealing nose that's compact and fruit-driven, with notes of ripe pear and apple compote. Enjoyably bright finish. The cinnamon oak work is subtle. You could drink this by itself or with food. Good sense of tension.

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, Clos Florentin, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

Clos Florentin had an incredible fragrance from barrel, peppery and distinctly floral this year. It has a satin texture and is so fine and light in body. It's sapid, with good acidity, all in all very attractive, light in structure, and well balanced.

Black pepper, berry fruits and a touch of smoky bacon on the nose really makes you want to dive in. In the mouth it's light-bodied, fresh and drinkable. The oak work is subtle, well integrated, and it all leads to a lifted finish. A joy to drink. Not a big, powerful St-Joseph to age, more one to drink young, with much pleasure. Destemmed, no pigeage, no new oak.

Bright and floral style with exuberant blackberries, liquorice, hibiscus and violets. A well balanced, fresh and expressive wine. A light- to medium-bodied,expression with gentle, fine tannins and bay leaf to finish. All about freshness and vibrancy this year. 80% whole bunch.

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

A tasting of the component barrels suggest that this will be a balanced, fresh and saline vintage rather than a structured or powerful one. Les Challaix was expressive, tight and vivid. Bachasson was very fresh, with its characteristic floral rose aromas, with iron-tinged tannins; La Dardouille provides the richness and generosity of fruit. Very promising.

Domaine Coursodon, La Sensonne, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

The nose is dominated by cinnamon, nutmeg and clove oak spice. The palate is rounded, ripe, concentrated but fresh, very impressive. The fruit is ripe enough to handle the oak and it finishes fresh and long. This will take a long time to digest its oak, but will be excellent in time. Will appear very oaky if you drink it young. Old vines, destemmed, aged in 100% new oak barriques.

A touch of menthol and clove from the oak, which is present on the palate too, this will take a little while to integrate. It's very good quality however, has length and line, is a well-balanced and well-made oaked example. From the estate's oldest vines, 20% whole bunch, aged in barriques and demi-muids.

Darker in fruit than some 2024s, this is introverted for now, very young. It's ripe on the palate, easy to like, welcoming and enticing. Lovely weight of fruit, and well-judged oak that doesn't dominate. This has ample length and concentration, it's a good pick this year. From 60-year-old vines, all destemmed, granitic terroir near Mauves, 15% new oak.

Domaine Jolivet, 1907, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

The nose is very promising, showing complexity already, with defined spices, smoke and berry fruits. No lack of concentration here, plenty of fruit, really mouthfilling, all contained in a dense tannic weave. Fresh from start to finish, well balanced with a long finish. This could be really excellent in time, I might be underrating this. From the oldest vines of the domaine, all whole bunch, all natural yeasts.

Vignobles Chirat, Soliste, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

Gorgeous nose of pink and black peppercorn and raspberry. It's very juicy, showing raspberry on the palate too, and it's lifted and spicy. Good acidity, well balanced. A joyful St-Joseph, no heaviness or excesses, just lovely drinkability. For a St-Jo to drink young, this is a great option. So fresh. From a vineyard in Chavanay, 25% whole bunch, 25% new oak.

Aurélien Chatagnier, La Sybarite, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

A pert, red-fruited style, bright and juicy, luminous raspberry flavours go long into the finish. Cedary oak helps to tuck everything in. Atypical in its red-fruitedness and raspberryish acidity. But it's precise, tense and enjoyable. I would drink young, but could surprise with age.

Spicy, peppery nose with star anise and clove. Attractive freshness, subtle floral notes behind the spice and smoke. Compact, well balanced and highly drinkable style, with good length. An elegant, appealing St-Joseph that doesn't shout, it's just quietly confident.

Domaine Farge, Terroir de Granit, St-Joseph, Rhône, France, 2024

A peppery nose leads to a light-bodied style, but there's no lack of intensity to the fruit. The finish is smoky, with slightly fibrous tannins. More about spice, smoke and structure than fruit. Very mineral, granitic, savoury style.

Deep, herbal menthol freshness is followed by a lovely bright, fresh palate. There's a good sense of ripeness to the fruit and zesty acidity. No great length, but a fantastic burst of fruit, and a lick of granite on the finish. Very mineral style.

Beautiful nose, a dizzying array of flowers and spices, just wonderful. Light-bodied, with pink peppercorns on the palate. Just a light touch of tannin on the tip of the tongue, this is all about the aromatics. Fine and elegant. I would drink young.

Spicy, fresh and peppery aromas. Precise, mineral, slim, granitic style. Not a generously fruited St-Joseph, this is more structured, fine-boned. Light-bodied, all about texture and rock. Oak work is robust, but it works well, and will meld in time.

Tobacco notes on the nose, then delicious generosity of texture and fresh berry fruit on the palate. Rose, raspberry, violet characters shine through. Good length. The oak work is quite present, so give this time, but it's still elegant. Juicy, fresh, very drinkable.
