Top Pomerol 2018 wines: Re-tasted in bottle
Jane Anson found less consistency in Pomerol than in St-Emilion after tasting the recently-bottled Bordeaux 2018 wines but says there are still some brilliant bottles here if you know where to look.

An earlier-ripening area, as with Pessac-Léognan, which meant there were lots of rich fruit flavours and welcoming tannins, but on the flip side there were also some overly-concentrated wines and drying tannins.
On the sandier soils, there were issues with high alcohols, although the plateau has fared well and you will find plenty of wines that have held their nerve over ageing, and are delivering brilliant bottles.
Pomerol was less consistent than St-Emilion though, which is not something I find myself saying often.
The average yields here were 36hl/ha.
