A concentrated and powerful year, where patience was key due to the late onset of the botrytis. September saw just 0.5mm of rain fall in the area, meaning that there was no water to kick start the noble rot process and some estates saw grapes concentrating through simple water loss known as passerillage.
Jean-Jacques Durboudieu of Doisy-Daëne pointed out that late-onset botrytis used to be fairly common in the area, but I question the uplift on some of the wines.
However, this worry came only if winemakers had managed to make it through the early part of the vintage, as Sauternes suffered the same issues with rain and mildew as did other parts of Bordeaux.
Estates such as Coutet, Suduiraut and de Fargues had yields right down to 5hl/ha or less.
It means that this is a vintage for fans of a luscious style of Sauternes.
The dry whites saw some of their earliest harvesting in their history – August 13 at Yquem, and again it was a great addition to the tastings this year to taste the dry whites of the classified estates.
Among those of particular interest was the new dry white of Château Climens, Asphodèle. It’s a 100% Sémillon, as with the main wine, and also biodynamic, made in collaboration with Loire legend Pascal Jolivet – he worked just on this first vintage with them, making it a reason in itself to track down a bottle.
