Bordeaux 2012: steady but unspectacular price drops

Price drops continue to be steady rather than spectacular as the 2012 campaign continues its quick pace.

Prieuré Lichine: down 19%

Yesterday saw Chateau Poujeaux out at €16.20 ex-Bordeaux (down 4% on 2011), Chateau Kirwan at €22.50 (down 21%), Cantermerle at €17.80 (down 6.25%), Alter Ego de Palmer at €37.50 (down 6%), Prieuré Lichine at €22.75 (down 19%), Tour Carnet €18 (down 9%) and Fleur de Bouard at €16.75 (down 3%).

This morning continued equally busily, with the Mouton Rothschild stable of wines bringing their prices out.

Chateau d’Armailhac is being offered at €25 ex-Bordeaux (a drop of 16%), and Clerc Milon at €31 (down 13.8%). Chateau Coutet, which is not owned by the Rothschilds but is distributed as part of their portfolio is €31, a significant drop of 26% on last year.

In Margaux, Chateau du Tertre also made an appearance at €19.20 ex-Bordeaux, down from €20.90 in 2011.

Its sister property Giscours is expected later today or tomorrow.

In Saint Emilion, Chateau Balestard la Tonnelle has made one of the biggest drops of the year, a full 30% down to €16.80, while Pavie Decesse came down 7% to €78 (the same price as in 2008).

Another Gerard Perse wine (although now partly owned by a French pensions company), Chateau Monbusquet, saw a 5% reduction to €25.

The timing indicates that newly-promoted Chateau Pavie will be released later today or tomorrow.

‘The speed of the campaign has taken us by surprise,’ David Kapikian, marketing manager for the retailer Lavinia in Paris told Decanter.com, ‘but so far the prices have been encouraging. It’s too early to say how our customers are responding as our first offers are just going out, but we are getting behind the campaign.’
