Christie’s DWWA auction for WaterAid hits new high

An auction of 2013 Decanter World Wine Awards wines hosted by Christie's in support of the international charity WaterAid has fetched record sales.

The auction, which included 103 lots of wine from the ‘over £10-a-bottle’ category of the 2013 Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA), raised a hammer total of GBP52,200, excluding an auction house buyer’s premium of 17.5%.

Proceeds from the auction will go to support WaterAid in its work to provide safe drinking water and proper sanitation to developing countries across Asia and Africa.

This year’s auction represents a record sales total, albeit from a higher number of lots, since Decanter began its Turning Wine into Water partnership with WaterAid in 2005.

Champagne proved particularly popular among buyers at the auction, held on 24 October at Christie’s’ salesroom in St James’s, London. One buyer bought 24 bottles of Champagne for GBP480, double the sales estimate.

Decanter publishing director Sarah Kemp said she was ‘thrilled and delighted with the sale, which is a fantastic contribution to WaterAid’s important work’.

‘To have such wonderful, long-lasting support from Decanter is something WaterAid is very proud of,’ added Dave Hillyard, WaterAid’s head of major partnerships.

Around 768m of the world’s 7bn people live without safe water, and 2,000 children die daily from diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation, according to WaterAid. It costs GBP15 to buy the tools to build a well that can provide safe water, and GBP50 to train a local pump mechanic.
