Andrew Jefford has joined Decanter magazine's main panel of writers and critics as a contributing editor.
The veteran wine writer joins consultant editor Steven Spurrier, Stephen Brook, Jeannie Cho Lee MW, James Lawther MW, Fiona Beckett, John Stimpfig and Brian St Pierre as one of Decanter’s most valued contributors
He also starts a new column on Decanter.com, Jefford on Monday, which opens with a look at the dangers of making wine in earthquake zones.
Jefford has just spent 15 months in Australia as a senior research fellow at Adelaide University, and is the author of more than a dozen books on wine and whisky, notably The New France, several editions of the Evening Standard Wine Guide, and Peat Smoke and Spirit: A Portrait of Islay and its Whiskies.
He now lives with his family in the South of France and is currently writing a book on Australia’s wine landscape and terroirs based on his time there.
Jefford has won over 30 awards for his work, including the coveted Glenfiddich Award eight times, the Roederer Award, the Lanson, the British Guild of Beer Writers Beer Writer of the Year, and many others.
He has written for Decanter magazine for 20 years.
Guy Woodward, Decanter‘s editor said, ‘I am delighted to have Andrew Jefford strengthen his ties to Decanter as a contributing editor. Andrew is recognised as among the most thoughtful and eloquent wine writers of his generation, and is constantly among our most popular and valued contributors.’
‘Wine isn’t just about ratings and tastings: it’s also about getting under the skin of wines and the people that make them. And there’s no one better at that than Andrew.’
Jefford said, ‘I’m thrilled to join the website with a weekly column – as it gives me a chance to respond to news and events in a way that isn’t really possible with the deadlines of a print column.
‘To some extent, what I write about over the coming weeks is as yet unplanned, as I want to reflect what’s happening in the wine world as swiftly as I can. But Australia and Asia will probably feature – I’m just planning a trip to Singapore at the moment – and I’d be very surprised if there wasn’t a story or two from my new home patch, here in the South of France.
‘If anyone has a story they’d like to share with me, either on or off the record, they are welcome to get in touch at any time via firstname.lastname@example.org‘
