Red Burgundy 2005: vintage preview – All wines

The 2005 was an exceptional vintage, especially in the Côte de Nuits where the Pinot grapes were harvested in perfect condition. Many winemakers comment on the unrivalled harmony of these red wines, the sensual texture thanks to extraordinarily ripe, embedded tannins, and a rare and wonderful mix of richness and freshness on the palate. Even at the generic level, the quality is unmistakable, and the best value for money is in the region's minor wines. Some wines will be ready to drink from as early as 2008, but don't be seduced into drinking the top village, premier cru and grand cru wines too early. Higher level wines will benefit from at least 10 years bottle age to develop further complexity. For a full review of the Red Burgundy 2005 vintage, see the March issue of Decanter magazine.
