For the first time ever at Vinexpo, visitors will have a chance to taste some of the award-winning wines on Decanter’s stand at the Decanter World Wine Awards Winners Tasting. The 2009 Decanter World Wine Awards was the most successful to date, attracting more entries this year than any other global wine competition in the world. In total 10,285 wines were entered, 64% of which were awarded a medal. Of those just 1% won a Regional Trophy, 2% won a gold medal and only 13% won a silver medal. Decanter’s Publishing Director Sarah Kemp said, ‘our success is a testament to our rigorous judging process and world-class judges, all of whom have an intimate and expert knowledge of the wine region they are judging’.
Highlights include the Valdivieso, Single Vineyard Merlot, Curicó Valley 2007 which won a Regional Trophy, plus the Kaapzicht Estate, Steytler Pinotage, Stellenbosch 2006 which won a gold medal.
This year the judges, more than 50 of whom flew in from overseas, included top sommeliers Isa Bal of The Fat Duck and Ferran Centelles from El Bulli, along with leading Australian wine writer Huon Hooke, and Berry Bros Wine Director Alun Griffiths MW.
Chairman of the Awards, Steven Spurrier, said ‘I feel this year that the DWWA has moved from being a very successful wine competition into an arena where it is a beacon for wine all around the world. The DWWA does not just offer winning wines a Decanter medal – it offers them a global platform to showcase that medal around the world.’
Following Vinexpo Decanter will be publicising the 2009 Decanter World Wine Awards results to consumers worldwide to coincide with the launch of the October 2009 Awards edition of Decanter.
