Sainsbury’s was one of the pioneers of UK supermarket wine, but its vinous range has become a little pedestrian in recent years. Press tastings featured the same reliable fixtures, and plenty of rather ho-hum selections, enlivened by only very occasional flashes of the sort of inspiration and adventure that were once such a key part of the retailer’s way of doing business.
This latest tasting may have been relatively small, with 63 wines compared to the 100 or more on show at Tesco, M&S, Asda, Waitrose and Morrisons. But the wines suggested things are moving in a markedly more interesting direction in the wine aisle of what remains the UK’s second-largest supermarket.
Highlights and new wines
Between them, Australia, France and Spain provided the lion’s share of the highlights. The Australian range, both red and white, was led by some of the country’s most respected names in the shape of fine new additions from Penfolds, Petaluma, Vasse Felix and Wakefield.
French favourites
There was a particularly strong showing from southern France, too. The spicy robust red blends of the Rhône and the Languedoc-Roussillon accounted for seven of the 24 red wines on show. They included high-scoring bottlings from the Côtes du Ventoux, Gigondas, St-Chinian and Terrasses du Larzac (see tasting notes below). An old favourite from Château les Bouysses in Cahors was also showing well.
France also accounted for two very sound Christmas fizz options, one apiece from the Loire and Limoux.
Spanish style
Meanwhile in Spain, Sainsbury’s is well served by some reliable big-name suppliers working in classic regions. CVNE’s typically polished Gran Reserva Rioja is exceptional value for a mature red wine in the very centre of its drinking window. It’s worth keeping your eyes peeled for offers that will make it even more of a bargain, too.
Value is also the operative word for the Taste the Difference Cava from Castillo Perelada. While the two Taste the Difference Sherries from Bodegas Lustau, which I’ve recommended below, are still among the most competitively priced wines anywhere on the high street.

Sainsbury's, Taste the Difference Chablis Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy, France, 2022

93
One of the best of the UK’s many supermarket Chablis, this has an extra degree of luminous concentration and fluency when set alongside its peers, the result, perhaps, of sourcing fruit from those titular old vines, which bring a touch of tropical richness that contrasts nicely with the clean racy acidity.

Rather like the TTD Chablis Vieilles Vignes, this 100% Cortese is a cut-above the often so-so supermarket ranks of its genre; a Gavi that ripples with cool-stream clarity and freshness, with subtle white flowers, preserved lemon and juicy fresh pear and apple.

Part of the Zuccardi family’s Poligonos range of Uco Valley 'village wines', this is sourced from fruit grown at 1,100m above sea level in Paraje Altamira – and it’s an absolute delight. Without lacking in plump mid-palate fleshiness or detailed red fruit, it’s so elegant, fragrant, silky textured and pure.

CVNE, Sainsbury's Taste the Difference, Rioja, Northern Spain, Spain, 2018

92
Whether it’s a function of the cooler 2018 vintage or of the stylistic preferences of CVNE, or a bit of both, this is a delightfully fresh and graceful take on the classic Gran Reserva recipe, with a swish of bright blackberry and strawberry leading into the spicier and incipient leathery-savoury tones. Very polished and will keep improving for a few years yet. Great value.

Sainsbury's, Taste the Difference Fino Reserva Sherry, Jerez, Spain

92
Made by Bodegas Lustau, Sainsbury’s TTD Sherries are always among the highlights of the retailer’s range tastings, and this Fino is particularly attractive, with that classic yeasty sourdough toast and nuts character part of a delectably soft and silky-textured package with a crisp and moreish finish. In-store only.

Sainsbury's, Taste the Difference Oloroso Sherry, Jerez, Spain

93
Calling Sherry good value is almost tautological at this point, but this perennial favourite of the Sainsbury’s TTD range really is amazing quality for the money, a wine of immensely tangy intensity with orange citrus and raisin-box characters, part of a complex mix that also includes figs and cinnamon.
