Marks & Spencer, Etoile de Timberlay NV, Crémant de Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France

Great value for a traditional-method sparkling, this is an ideal bottle to have chilling in the fridge for weekday toasting or to buy by the case for a party. It’s fresher and crisper than Prosecco, but still boasts lovely ripe fruit – think juicy red apple underscored by tropical hints and a lemony, herbal edge. Vegan.

Clos des Lunes, Lune d'Argent, Bordeaux Blanc, Bordeaux, France, 2022

For me, the best dry white Bordeaux is Semillon-driven, and this is a classic expression, blended with 30% Sauvignon Blanc. Made from old vines in Sauternes by Olivier Bernard, owner of Graves heavyweight Domaine de Chevalier, the weight and concentration strike you immediately, but it’s not overbearing. Juicy white peach opulence, acacia blossom fragrance, lemon peel zest and a seam of minerality. Complex and rewarding, and could be cellared for another five years.

Château de Chantegrive, Caroline, Graves, Bordeaux, France, 2016

Equal amounts of vibrancy and depth in this elegant blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon – aged nine months in oak (50% new) on the lees with frequent batonnage – that retains freshness while showing nutty maturity. The fleshy core of yellow apple and Asian pear rests weightily on the mid-palate, with a glaze of lemon and honey – all topped with lime zest and toasted almonds. Outstanding value for a mature, polished white Bordeaux, drinking perfectly now and punching well above its weight.

Château Reynier, Bordeaux Blanc, Bordeaux, France, 2024

Produced by Marc and Agnès Lurton, of one of the great Bordeaux wine-growing families, from a vineyard situated in Grezillac, in Bordeaux’s famed Entre-deux-Mers region, planted on slopes in outstanding clay-limestone terroir. This lovely, dry, crisp and fruity wine, made from a blend of Sauvignon, Semillon and Muscadelle shows elegant aromas of grapefruit, mango and pineapple, with well-balanced acidity and richness on the palate.

Berry Bros & Rudd, Extra Ordinary Claret by Château Villa Bel-Air, Graves, Bordeaux, France, 2022

Made for Berrys by Château Villa Bel-Air in the southern Graves, the EOC is always a dependable buy and great value. The 2022 is 53% Cabernet Sauvignon with 44% Merlot and a splash of Cabernet Franc, showing inviting, perfumed aromas of purple fruit and red cherry laced with floral notes. The palate is fresh and supple; rounded tannins support ripe plum and blueberry fruit, with a touch of gravelly minerality plus lingering spice and fresh red fruit on the finish.

Château de Beauregard-Ducourt, Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France, 2018

A charming, ripe and juicy red from one of the largest independent producers in the Entre-deux-Mers. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot on clay-limestone soils, it bursts with blackcurrant and red cherries and savoury spice notes of mint and cedar. Concentrated but vibrant with an easy-drinking appeal.

Château Les Vieux Moulins, Pirouette, Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France, 2021

A joyful, juicy red Bordeaux from this organic-certified estate – Damien Lorteau having convinced his parents to start conversion when he joined the family property in 2010. It has all of the plum, cassis and blackcurrant leaf goodness, but what I especially love is the zing and zap of the fresh acidity; an energising tonic to a humdrum week.

Château Marjosse, Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France, 2022

Located in the north of the Entre-deux- Mers, with highly reputed owner Pierre Lurton, Marjosse produces some of the best-value wines in Bordeaux. The 2022 is a Merlot-based blend with support from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Blue fruit, bell pepper and a touch of spice on the nose. A generous palate with well-managed tannins and darker, more brooding black fruit and violets appearing on the finish.

Château de Parenchère, L'Equilibriste, Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France, 2022

A value Bordeaux for immediate drinking and made without the use of sulphites, L’Equilibriste is a Cabernet Franc-based blend from the estate, moving towards organic farming and located exactly on Bordeaux’s eatern border with Dordogne. Aromas of dark plums, liquorice and turned earth lead to a palate that boasts robust black fruits, notes of tobacco leaf and a touch of sweet soil. Great length and an ample structure.

Château Picque Caillou, Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux, France, 2017

A classic, unfussy claret. A lovely whiff of wood spice, a slightly savoury edge and then fruits of the forest coulis glides onto the palate with a silky caress. More red fruits than black, enough ripeness to hold the tartness in check. Not hugely complex but delivers in what was a so-so vintage. Picque-Caillou is exactly what I love in non-flashy Bordeaux. It’s a consistent performer year after year, you can keep it for years and it’s a bargain.

Château Pierbone, Haut-Médoc, Bordeaux, France, 2014

Second wines can occasionally be rather hit and miss, especially at 11 years of age, but this bottle by the Duboscq family from the highly regarded Château Peyrabon delivers more than you might expect. A Cabernet-Merlot blend, it offers notes of blackcurrant, cedar, graphite and a touch of leather, along with grippy tannins. Enjoyed recently with a roast rib of beef, it’s still delightfully fresh and holding beautifully. All in all, a great-value claret.

Waitrose, No.1 Sauternes by Château Suduiraut, Sauternes, Bordeaux, France, 2015

Crafted by Château Suduiraut, this luscious half-bottle shows a golden hue and boasts aromas of beeswax, mango, candied tangerine peel and dried apricot on the nose. Surprisingly fresh on the rich palate, with notes of bitter orange zest and white pepper, finishing long with hints of roasted hazelnuts.
