2003 vintage guide for Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon

Washington 2003: Drink now

Ripe yet well structured wines.

Weather Conditions

The season began with a normal, mild spring, but by June the weather warmed up. With July and August being above average in temperature, this turned out to be a hotter than normal summer. However, a cooling trend in early September came along to slow down sugar development and to allow better flavour build up. The smooth September was followed by a warm October, quickly bringing most of the fruit to full maturity. Overall, a hot vintage, similar to 1998.

Best Appellations

Walla Walla, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley.

Best Producers

Chateau Ste Michelle, Columbia Signature Series, Bookwalter, Columbia Crest Reserve, Leonetti, Woodward Canyon.
