Terra Organica, Prosecco NV, Veneto, Italy

Part of Sainsbury's new summer 2023 range and available from June, this organic offering punches above its price and will certainly please Prosecco fans. The ripe pear notes you'd expect on the palate are joined by exotic hints of lychee and rose; well balanced by bright acidity, so that it finishes crisp and dry. A good value choice for summer celebrations.

An enjoyable and lively wine that deserves brownie points for showcasing the potential of resistant varieties (Sauvignac and Muscaris) in a classical region. Very pure and fresh, with fragrant jasmine and orange blossom preceding the zesty pink grapefruit and lime. Saline twist to the finish.

Brokenwood, The Society's Exhibition Hunter Valley Sémillon, Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia, 2018

91
Textbook Hunter Valley Sémillon, at a very interesting point of its development. Deep citrus and orchard fruit mingle with the notes of flint, gunpowder, beeswax and toasted almonds that start to emerge. A succulent layer of poached pears and marzipan gives substance to the mid palate, topped by subtle notes of linden and hay. Delicious.

The Kumeu River team calls this 'a perfect aperitif wine' sourced from the Rays Road vineyard and others in Hawke's Bay along with Kumeu estate fruit. It's a minerally, crisp Chablis style showcasing green apple and crunchy nectarine flavours with lime leaf and verbena nuances.

A great-value bushvine blend of 1962-planted Chenin Blanc with 30% Grenache Blanc and 10% Viognier. A jumble of ripe stone, orchard and tropical fruit flavours flood the mid-weight palate, supported by quenching citrus acidity, chalky tannins and delicate oak spicing.

Marlborough Heartland, Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand, 2022

90
Top winemaker David Hohnen of Cloudy Bay fame joins forces with the Marlborough Grape Grower's Co-operative for this Sauvignon that's new to Sainsbury's from July. Blending grapes from the Wairau, Waihopai, Ornaka and Awatere valleys, it's a distinctive style with a big hit of green bell pepper, sugar snap peas and pea shoots on the nose. There's a mid-weight intensity to the punchy palate, that's packed with juicy lime, green pepper and fresh lemon, all underpinned by bright, linear acidity.

Colpaola, Verdicchio di Matelica, Le Marche, Italy, 2021

After years selling grapes to the local cooperative, the Porcarelli family began bottling its own wines in 2013. From vines at an elevated 650m, this organic white is appley, pithy and concentrated. Fresh and breezy, it has some herbal lift and a lovely saline finish. Ageable and food-friendly.

Domaine Begude, Le Paradis Viognier, Limoux, Languedoc-Roussillon, France, 2022

89
Brits Catherine and James Kinglake moved from London to Limoux, in the Pyrenees, 20 years ago. When they first made this Viognier there was so little juice to ferment that they were forced to use small oak barrels instead of stainless steel. They loved the results so much that they've stuck with the same winemaking method, producing a wine that has plenty of juicy peach and apricot stone fruit, but fresh and leafy in nature rather than overripe. Viognier can sometimes be too 'in your face' – a one glass only wine (OGO as I write in tasting note shorthand) – but this one is textural without being heavy or unctuous, and isn't too phenolic. Well made, and a pleasure to drink. (Mix-six price: £14.99)

Château Gairoird, GrandRosé, Côtes de Provence, Pierrefeu, Provence, France, 2022

92
The limestone and schist soils that these vines are grown on (organically) give this wine a real intensity and fuller body than many Provençal rosés. There's a gorgeous weight of white peach and redcurrant fruit, vinous with fresh acidity and a depth of flavour.

Brookdale, Mason Road Syrah, Paarl, South Africa, 2020

93
From only the third crop of Brookdale Syrah, the concentration here is admirable (newer vintages are even better), coaxed out by effervescent winemaker Kiara Scott. Some whole-bunch use gives a sappy freshness to the summer pudding and darker plum skin flavours, and deft nutmeg oak doesn't detract from the lithe, nimble fruit. Dangerously quaffable and a steal at this price, as is Scott's Mason Road Chenin.

Journey's End, V5 Cabernet Franc, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2021

There’s a Mediterranean side to this beautiful Cabernet Franc, with dry coastal herbs topping the juicy cranberry and raspberry fruit. Refreshing and lingering spicy notes (white pepper, salty liquorice, nutmeg) add depth and gastronomic appeal. Mineral structure to the soft yet firm tannins.

Santa Tresa, Rina Russa Organic Frappato, Vittoria, Sicily, Italy, 2022

92
Made by acclaimed consultant winemaker Stefano Chioccioli, and new on the shelves at Waitrose, this is textbook Frappato, delicate, bright and fresh. Bright cherry red in colour, this is summer pudding in a glass, with aromas and a mouthwatering purity of crushed wild strawberries, raspberries and pomegranate. It’s lean and elegant and a perfect summer red. Try it served ever so slightly chilled, with grilled tuna.

Santa Rita, Cabernario No.8, Maipo Valley, Chile, 2020

91
Classic Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon – the king of red wines there – from a plot of old ungrafted vines planted in 1964 in Alto Maipo. Aged for 10 months in French oak (30% new) and then a further six months in barrel, this bold red has gummy blackcurrant fruit perfume and flavours, with some dark meatiness from 15% Syrah in the blend. Structure, smooth tannins and a generosity of fruit, and a great price.

Wynns Coonawarra Estate, The Siding Cabernet Sauvignon, Coonawarra, South Australia, Australia, 2021

91
Wynns was the first winery to be established in Coonawarra, by John Riddoch back in 1896. The renowned terra rossa soils of the region and the expert winemaking have come together to produce a fantastic Cabernet for the money, deep and rich and generously fruited in style – all that and yet under 14% in alcohol. Inky in the glass, and filled with juicy dark blueberry, plum and blackcurrant fruit, plus hints of pine and eucalyptus. The wine matured for 14 months in a mix of new and older French oak, giving structure, and present but not harsh tannins. Lovely balance, velvety and with a cocoa richness.

The light colour and body you'd expect from Nerello Mascalese but none of its strident tannins, thanks to the extra time mellowing in bottle.
