It was one of those dreary, wet Saturdays in a wet, dreary month: the UK endured its soggiest April on record in 2012. Perfect lunching weather, in other words. I sat for a while in a coffee bar near to Old St, watching London’s most fastidious street cleaner diligently work his way down Leonard St and back. And then, with ever-lightening footsteps, I made my way to Eyre Brothers.

My favourite week of the year has come and gone. The Decanter World Wine Awards was as logistically dazzling as ever: at the same prearranged date, and at one small point on the earth’s surface, 211 wine tasters and over 14,000 wines converged from homes, vineyards and cellars scattered throughout the temperate bands of each hemisphere.

Shortly after moving to France, I remember chatting to a Rhone wine producer about some minor issue, and hearing her say "Oui, mais on n'a pas le droit" (yes, but we don’t have the right to do that). End of conversational thread.
