DWWA Global Tastings 2012 – a word from Vin Room, Calgary, Canada

Find out why our venues are so thrilled to be a part of an extraordinary series of tastings around the world!

We caught up with Phoebe Fung at Vin Room, to find out what she thinks about this year’s Global Tastings event, and why she is so keen to get involved in this series of DWWA tastings.

What made you want to get involved with Decanter’s Global Tastings programme this year?

Phoebe: This is the second year that Vin Room has been part of Decanter’s Global Tastings program. We are honoured to be part of this prestigious event and to be the only restaurant in Canada to offer Decanter’s Global Tastings programme this year.

What do you think Decanter’s Global Tastings programme offers consumers?

P: Decanter’s Global Tastings programme provides consumers a chance to experiment with award winning wines from across the globe. This is a great opportunity to find new favourites with very low risk.

Can you explain a bit about yourselves, in terms of what you offer and where you’re based around the world?

P: Vin Room is Canada’s largest wine bar, with over 104 wines by the glass. We have Canada’s largest installation of Enomatic Wine Preservation System , which allows us to provide our extensive glass offering in 2 oz , 6 oz and bottle formats. We provide an upscale casual setting for you to enjoy our wine list , which is complimented by local tapas created with a global twist.

Which DWWA 2012 wines did you have on offer for consumers to taste?

P: We are offering 16 wines DWWA wines for consumers to taste in 2 oz, 6 oz , 13 oz and bottle options. These include gems from around the world, including the 2011 Andeluna Malbec from Argentina, Canaletto Prosecco from Italy and 2010 Glaetzer Anaperenna Shiraz from Australia.

A complete list of our offerings is available on www.vinroom.com

How did you promote the Global Tastings fortnight, did you host any special events?

P: We have been promoting the Global Tastings to all of our guests and it has been a feature on our monthly newsletter. We’ve received positive from our guests.

How were the tastings received by wine enthusiasts?

P: Fantastic! Our guests love the opportunity to be a part of the Global Tastings Programme

Have you noticed any particular tasting trends or interest in any specific or unusual wines from the ones on offer?

P: We at Vin Room are proud to provide monthly featured wines to taste. We find that our guests enjoy trying new products that represent the best of each region of the world and like to sample in 2 oz pours. Majority of our wine sales are now by the glass.

With Decanter’s Global Tastings, people are able to taste and share lots of different wines through the use of Enomatic machines, what do you think it is about this format that people like so much? What do the machines brings to a tasting like this?

P: I think that people like variety and what better way to have “low risk” experimentation than to provide many options for guests to try. The Enomatic machines are a great tool to showcase Decanter award winning wines , as well as keep the wine fresh for our guests.

Have you seen an uplift of wine sales as a result of the Global Tastings programme?

P: Well, it just started to snow in Calgary today, so there’s nothing better than a glass of wine on a cold fall day, especially an Decanter award winning wine!

Would you like to be part of the programme next year?

P: We would always welcome the opportunity to be part of the programme next year.  We strive to encourage a wine culture and being part of Decanter’s Global Tastings programme is definitely in line with Vin Room’s offering.
