1985 vintage guide for Red Rhone

drink now

Cote Rotie delivered the best red wines

Weather Conditions

After a successful flowering, the summer in the north was hot and dry, and maturation was helped by some rain in late August. The Syrah ripened beautifully, although warm weather during harvest caused problems for those without temperature control. A similar pattern in the south.

Best Appellations

North: Côte Rotie delivered the best red wines, although the overall quality was high throughout the region. These are wines with opulence and succulence. South: rich and delicious reds from Châteauneuf and Gigondas. (Big aromatic wines from Condrieu)

Best Producers

An excellent vintage for Cote Rotie from Guigal. This was the first vintage of La Turque. Delicious Hermitage from Chave, Marc Sorrel and Bernard Faurie.

Superb Chateauneuf produced at Beaucastel, Fortia, Rayas and Vieux Telegraphe.
