Chablis 2019: Best-value wines under £20/$25

It's always interesting to see the different expressions from the Dampt family. There seems to be additional richness and a bit more concentration on the palate compared to Sébastien's bottling. This is a refined, regal example with a fine balance between fruit density, freshness, ripeness and lingering acidity to finish. All of the components are in very good balance. Drinking well already but will also age very well.

Vau de Vey is perhaps not top of most consumer lists when asked for the key Premier Cru sites, yet it is widely regarded as having outstanding potential. With steep-sided valleys and protection from all but the morning sun, it's a Premier Cru with loads of fresh, mineral, bright citrus characters. Domaine des Malandes has succeeded in capturing the essence of Vau de Vey. This is already appealing but will age very well for at least five years (and beyond).

The Seguinot family roots in Maligny date back to 1590. Run by Jean-François, this is a dynamic estate producing some classic Chablis. On the nose, this could only be Chablis, with a restrained palate showing some prominent acidity. Not a blockbuster style but one with precision and a fine line of concentration, revolving around mineral characters. Elegant, fine and long. A very classy example of Fourchaume from vines that average 50 years old.

Tremblay make classic, steely, pure Chablis wines. This is a refined, elegant, smooth and weighty example of AOP Chablis which combines a ready-to-drink quality with potential for the future. A harmonious, appealing and fine wine with zesty citrus notes on the finish. The classic, cool-climate acidity provides a great juxtaposition with the sunny, ripeness of fruit here.

Jean-Francois Bordet continues to drive his domaine forward. Using cylindrical, horizontal tanks for improved skin-contact, this is a highly appealing Chablis which balances acidity, concentration of ripe fruit and a lovely subtle under-tow of salinity. A crisp, fresh Chablis which will drink well from young, but also age.

Louis Moreau's domaine bottling has an extra layer of complexity compared to the Domaine de Bieville. Green apple character dominates the palate with some flinty, slightly smoky notes on the finish. A restrained AOP Chablis where the overall balance is very appealing and complex. Ideally keep this for another six months but will drink very well over the next 2-3 years.

Guillaume Vrignaud's estate is located in Fontenay and is highly-regarded. Organically certified, this Petit Chablis has great presence and punches above its weight. Lovely density on the palate with stony, flinty characters allied with apple fruit and a hint of some tropical elements. There is a beguiling freshness and mineral aftertaste here which makes one want to drink more than a glass (or two)! Plenty of potential to age as well.

One would expect the quality-focussed Co-op La Chablisienne to produce a classic Chablis in a year such as 2019 - and they have. Some intriguing, delicate, floral and smoky aromas are evident in the glass, combined with weight and concentration on the palate. Some crunchy peach fruit and green apple characters are evident with a purity of flavour and freshness on the finish. Fine-grained, long and with very good potential for further ageing.

A more serious, intellectual wine than the 'straight' Chablisienne Chablis. Acidity is more pronounced and the nose is more strident. A Chablis that will be very good but which needs another year in bottle to fully integrate and balance the high acidity. Lots of potential and great purity of flavour - just needs more time.

Baudouin Millet and brother Paterne took over from their father in 2002, and the estate is located between Chablis and Tonnerre. More depth and drive than their Petit Chablis here. It has pronounced acidity and typical 2019 concentration. Generous on the palate but also quite structured and long with good spice to finish. An appealing style for relatively early drinking.

Samuel Billaud produces his Chablis from a blend of three different parcels. Quite restrained, concentrated and flinty on the palate, there is lovely purity of fruit here. A classic example of village Chablis which will age well.

A cooler, crisper style of Chablis from Milly, this shows some smoky, slightly green characters on the palate. Not green in a bad way, just a cooler feel to the fruit than many of the riper, sunnier, expressions found in 2019. Will appeal to those looking for a more 'classic' style.

Another Chablis from the (often-overlooked) commune of Prehy, Celine & Frederic Gueguen have produced a Chablis with an excellent balance between fruit ripeness and bright acidity. Fleshy, forward and appealing, there is good concentration here with citrus acidity to keep the palate fresh. An appealing spicy note rounds of the finish.

A fleshy and appealing Petit Chablis which is already drinking well. There is good density of fruit here with apple fruit acidity to counterbalance the ripeness of stone fruit. As expected from Domaine Louis Michel, this is a Chablis which has very good balance and enough density to age well for several years.

A typical Mauperthuis wine with lovely purity of fruit, good definition and a fine balance of acidity to add a laser-like focus to the wine. Although a tank sample, this has a promising balance between ripeness of fruit and good acidity. Bodes well for the future.

Another Beine producer, Sylvain Mosnier came to the estate in 1978. Today, daughter Stephanie is making the wine. This is an approachable Petit Chablis with crisp acidity, fair weight and some complexity to balance the stoned fruit ripeness on the palate.

Full, fleshy, ripe stone fruits on the palate. A flamboyant wine with lots of density and weight. Has enough acidity to balance in the short-term but this seems very appealing and easy drinking already. FInishes with some flinty, zesty notes. Perhaps not classic Chablis but a wine that will certainly appeal to many.

A very crisp Petit Chablis from Jean-Francois Bordet with a fine texture. Although this is an appealing, fresh, early-drinking wine, there is a steely core, with tight acidity and a lingering, mineral aftertaste.
