During my en primeur tastings in October this year, I ask Franck Balthazar what he thinks of the 2024 vintage.
‘I love it,’ he says, and to taste his wines you immediately see why. It’s the kind of vintage that really chimes with his fragrant, elegant style of Cornas.

According to Olivier Clape, ‘it looks more like an old-school vintage, less big and impressive, but more detailed’.
Here, like elsewhere in Cornas, it’s a return to a more measured style that’s more about classicism than exuberance or power.
Some wines are a touch dilute and lack breadth, but most have energy and freshness, often accompanied by a herbal note to the aromatic profile.
Most will be approachable young, and apart from a few notable exceptions, this isn’t a vintage for long ageing, so pay attention to the drinking windows advised.

M Chapoutier, Haut-Chamblard, St-Péray, Rhône, France, 2024

Touch of fresh quince on the nose, it's perfumed and attractive, broad and rich but fresh. Lovely balance, so drinkable, displaying impressive grip and intensity, married with soft, voluptuous apricot fruit. Vines planted on granite soils in 2014, just higher than the village of St-Péray itself. Should offer good value for money.

M Chapoutier, Lieu-dit Hongrie, St-Péray, Rhône, France, 2024

Pronounced struck-match reduction. Fresh aromas of petrichor and dried honey that are repeated on the tense, fresh, saline palate. Very measured oak use and this has that limestone buzz of acidity, plus a long finish. Very good vintage of this cuvée, should age with interest. Vines are up to 25 years old. Mostly aged in demi-muid with around 15% new oak.

Domaine Bernard Gripa, Les Pins, St-Péray, Rhône, France, 2024

Cashew aromas on the nose, apricot pastry on the palate. Fresh, with a balancing mineral seam, this is long, focused, fresh, mouthfilling and perfectly balanced; just delightful. Vines grown on clay limestone over granite; aged in barriques and demi-muids.

Domaine Bernard Gripa, Les Figuiers, St-Péray, Rhône, France, 2024

Full-bodied, rich and generous but soft and yielding on the palate. The oak work is to the fore currently but should integrate, so give it time. Classic St-Péray in its charm and elegance. Low acidity but fresh nonetheless. Grown on clay limestone soils; aged in barriques.

Domaine du Tunnel, Roussanne, St-Péray, Rhône, France, 2024

Intense fresh mango and mango sorbet aromas. Very concentrated but not overly fat or heavy, just big bursts of loud mango and pear flavours that persist. The acidity is low but the wine feels fresh and vibrant. Ageability is hard to gauge; I would drink young. This could only be Domaine du Tunnel – such concentration and vibrancy. Natural yeasts, aged in used barriques.

This is a particularly lovely, fresh, balanced and enjoyable St-Péray. Perfect line, length and precision. Subtle pear fruit, white flowers; just delightful. Drink young. Only sees stainless steel.

Domaine Clape, St-Péray, Rhône, France, 2024

Green tea, linden flower and apricot. Lovely freshness, not overly full-bodied, with a positive, bitter nip on the finish. More about freshness than specific fruits. One quarter matured in a new foudres this year.

Dried mango and orange peel, this has amazing concentration and expressive, defined aromatics. Powerful palate: long, persistent and flavoursome. Already drinking well, and I would drink young.

Flinty, smoky touch on the nose, just-ripe apricot on the palate. Soft but not flat, the acidity is enough to balance. Good sense of freshness and tension.

Domaine Chaboud-Cellier, Cuvée Boscus, St-Péray, Rhône, France, 2024

Aromas of citrus peel – grapefruit and satsuma. Medium-bodied, silky palate, there's a touch of bitterness and lime acidity. Possesses energy, freshness and vitality, and the tobacco and cedar oak is well integrated.

Domaine du Tunnel, Vin Noir, Cornas, Rhône, France, 2024

Intense, smoky and intriguing nose. Lovely concentration and purity of fruit with fine tannins, palate freshness and good length. Really elegant, a great success of the vintage, this is ripe, concentrated, fine and balanced. Will drink young and age into the medium term.

Domaine Eric & Joël Durand, Confidence, Cornas, Rhône, France, 2024

Concentrated, powerful, rich in fruit and very fine. Higher alcohol than most 2024s, but it suits the rich, velvety, elegant and stylish feel. Pure and attractive, the structure is fine enough for the wine to be drinking now but also to keep. Good freshness and balance, showing inky, pure black fruit. Compact but not light, with good energy. Granite soils, 30-year-old vines, 30% whole bunch and 30% new oak.

Dumien-Serrette, Patou, Cornas, Rhône, France, 2024

Smells of coffee bean, vanilla and nutmeg. Fairly full-bodied and velvety, with powerful grip, good acidity and snappy tannins. Wood smoke runs through it, ending on juicy raspberry and blackberry. A very precise, detailed and transparent style of Cornas; saline and granitic. Vines are 80 years of age, fermented in concrete, aged in used barriques.

Domaine Aléofane, Cornas, Rhône, France, 2024

Juicy, fresh, compact, with good energy and freshness. Vibrant and crunchy, some reduction on opening, so decant this if drinking young. Very Cornas in structure, with deeply etched beams of tannin and bright acidity running through it. Not a massive Cornas, but an energetic, cleansing one. Aged in demi-muids.

Domaine Eric & Joël Durand, Empreintes, Cornas, Rhône, France, 2024

Herbal juniper, rosemary, red fruits and spice. Good acidity and an edge to the tannins, so very Cornas in that respect, albeit in a lighter, more compact style to a typical year. Good length, transparency and detail.

Domaine Mucyn, Hypsos, Cornas, Rhône, France, 2024

Lovely herbal nose, complex and inviting, with black leaf tea on the palate. Concentrated, fresh, detailed and long; this is very good and a real winner of the vintage. A fresh, compact, traditional style of Cornas that will age with interest on its fine balance. Young vines grown at 320m, destemmed but not crushed, aged in barriques.

Domaine Vincent Paris, Granit 30, Cornas, Rhône, France, 2024

Juicy raspberry, thyme and rosemary. Not hugely concentrated but lovely freshness and vibrant acidity, with enjoyably edgy Cornas tannins. Very structural, tannic and salty. A bit more tannin than fruit, so this is one for tannin lovers. Fruit was all destemmed, aged in used barrels.

Domaine Vincent Paris, Granit 60, Cornas, Rhône, France, 2024

Smoky, evoking singed herbs. Lovely freshness on the palate, loads of energy and zesty acidity. Tight, tense, tannic and intense, this is a snappy, crunchy style of Cornas with bite – be aware, it's very tannic! 70% destemmed fruit, natural yeasts, aged in recent but not new barrels.

Ferraton Père & Fils, Lieu-dit Patou, Cornas, Rhône, France, 2024

Good sense of freshness and precision; very tannic, with real grip and edge. Vibrant forest berry fruit and a granitic edge on the salty finish, this is an athletic, punchy style from a south-facing slope in the south of the appellation. Destemmed fruit, fermented in concrete, aged in barrel, 10% new.

M Chapoutier, Lieu-dit St-Pierre, Cornas, Rhône, France, 2024

Vibrant in colour, this is showing blueberry and violet aromas. It’s medium-bodied but with quite tight, grippy, grainy tannins. Perhaps it lacks just a bit of concentration compared to some of the domaine’s other Sélection Parcellaires cuvées, and the tannins aren't quite as ripe, but it has well balanced acidity. It might take on weight with maturation, however. These grapes were the last to be harvested, on 4 October, as it's a very windy site. The vines are massale selection from Les Bessards; oldest vines are 25 years old, and it saw 10% whole bunch.

Brambly fruit, there's blackberry bush scents along with the berry fruit. Good acidity, ripe and balanced; has more structure and concentration than some 2024s. Persistent finish featuring pepper and juniper. A fine, delicate and drinkable Côte-Rôtie that will become Pinot-like with age.
