Cave de Lugny, Crémant de Bourgogne, Burgundy, France

91
Often overlooked, Crémant de Bourgogne has a lot to offer, both on quality and value, as this wine proves. Very elegant nose with freshness and mineral poise. Flavours of peach, green apple and pear rest on the palate with just enough weight, while lifted by the pleasantly textural bubbles. Good mineral length.

Castel Faglia, Franciacorta, Lombardy, Italy

90
This bottle-fermented blanc de blancs (100% Chardonnay) is a great-value Champagne alternative. It's bright straw yellow in colour, and fresh as a daisy, with aromatic, lemon citrus fruit notes and a caress of warm toastiness on the finish. Drier than many Brut Champagnes (3g/L dosage), with focus and vibrancy.

Cramele Recas, Wildflower Cuvée Blanc, Banat, Romania, 2020

92
Cramele Recas is a reliable name if you want to explore Romanian wines. This full-bodied blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Feteasca Regala and Muscat Ottonel has a depth of juicy stone fruits and some citrus zestiness. Fresh and elegant with a good length. Vegan.

Domaine Vaudoisey, Bourgogne Blanc, Burgundy, France, 2020

91
This is the third vintage of this Chardonnay, which comes from vines planted within the Volnay commune. It sings with white floral aromas and spice, displaying purity, depth and refreshing acidity. Very satisfying, and punches above its regional classification.

Baron de Ley, Blanco Rioja, Rioja, Spain, 2020

This unoaked white Rioja is great value for money. An easydrinking blend of Viura, Garnacha Blanca and Tempranillo Blanco that marries citrus and peach fruit with bright acidity and a fresh grassy uplift on the finish.

Marks & Spencer, Found Weissburgunder, Pfalz, Germany, 2021

90

The M&S Found range is a shining light in the supermarket's lineup, and this Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) from the Pfalz region is delightfully fresh and saline, with juicy peach flavours giving roundness to the dry and bright palate. Enjoy with chicken caesar salad or a selection of soft cheeses

Masi, Colbaraca, Soave, Classico Superiore, Veneto, Italy, 2019

90
This Soave Classico from Masi’s vineyard in Monteforte on volcanic hills is half vinified in wood, adding creamy notes to its rich apricot skin, ripe peach and green fruit character, and lending body and some spiciness in the mouth, too. The volcanic character is evident in its tight, mineral mid-palate. Delicious. Vegan.

Rustenberg, Roussanne, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2021

90

Rustenberg made the Cape's first varietal Roussanne in 2004 and it gets better each vintage. Very youthful still, it has apricot blossom perfume with delicate flavours of guava and wet stones on the fleshy, rounded palate. It's a variety that reveals its charms slowly, so buy a couple of bottles for the cellar.

Te Pa, Signature Series Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand, 2022

90
This Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc blends fruit in more or less equal proportions from the Wairau and Awatere Valleys. Wairau typically shows a more tropical profile, while Awatere fruit produces wines with a greener, crunchier edge. The blocks were fermented separately before being blended and aged on light lees. The result is a punchy and aromatic wine with a good depth of gooseberry, guava, grapefruit citrus and stone fruit flavour. There's also a nettley, herby twist. Zesty and tangy.

Trimbach, Riesling, Alsace, France, 2020

The Trimbach family has been making wines in Alsace since 1626. This Riesling has limey aromas with a hint of floral and rubber notes. Tight, dry lime and apple palate, with a pithy character and a touch of exotic fruits. Fresh finish.

Chassaux et Fils, Specially Selected Rosé, Costières de Nîmes, Rhône, France, 2021

90
Rosés aren't just for summer – Aldi has eight new wines in its autumn/winter range. This pretty Syrah- and Grenache-based blend is the pick of them, brimming with perky acidity, peppery red berries and hints of dried herbs. Try it with spicy sausages.

Palliser Estate, Pinot Noir, Martinborough, Wairarapa, New Zealand, 2020

93
This Pinot Noir punches well above its weight for the price. Forward aromas of dark berry and red raspberry with more forest fruit earthy tones on the palate, alongside inky grippy tannins and smoky tones. Will age another decade easily; serious, but good approachability too. Some 72% of fruit comes from organic vineyards with 20% undergoing whole bunch fermentation.

Aslina, Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2019

92
There’s a bold classicism to all of Ntiski Biyela’s wines, as shown in this poised yet assertive Cabernet Sauvignon. Intense black fruit is topped by a savoury layer of dry herbs and forest floor. A touch of Petit Verdot (15%) adds a leafy, intriguing aspect. Good cellaring potential.

Château Beauchêne, Le Terroir, Côtes du Rhône, Rhône, France, 2019

92
Explosively expressive, this cuvée comes from the Bernard family’s oldest vineyard, Grangeneuve, which straddles the Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône appellations. It’s gorgeous, with chewy red berry and cherry fruit, floral fragrance and a supple texture. Punchy alcohol but fresh and balanced.

Emiliana, Adobe Carmenère, Colchagua Valley, Chile, 2021

92
New to Booths, and a belter of a wine that tastes far more expensive than it is. Ripe blackberry and blueberry aromas leap from the glass and continue on the silky-smooth palate. There's nothing green about this wine, just purity of fruit, a cool freshness and a long creamy finish.

Baron Amarillo, Reserva, Rioja, Spain, 2016

90
With the 2014 Rioja Grand Reserva now sold out, this 100% Tempranillo is the best Spanish buy at Aldi. Enticing toasted coconut aromas from the oak continue on the supple palate. Developing notes of tobacco spice and wood polish enhance the red berry compote flavours. Great value.

A blend from Catena’s Angélica and La Pirámide vineyards, this Malbec is spicy and chocolatey, showing ripe, dark plummy fruits and fragrant potpourri scents. Sweet black and red fruit flavours are accompanied by slightly grippy tannins, a chocolatey character and some floral lift. A delicious Malbec for the money! Vegetarian.

Tesco, Douro, Douro Valley, Portugal, 2020

90
This is higher in alcohol than the previous vintage of this wine, but it manages to retain its fresh fruit character - by no means guaranteed in a region which can be fiercely hot in summer. It's unoaked, so fruit is to the fore here – ripe blackberry and plum flavours, with a violet fragrance and a touch of spice. A great-value table wine from the region that is most famous for its Ports.

Made by adding Cognac eau-de-vie to fresh grape juice or must (here Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon) and then lightly oaked. A lighter-style alternative to a traditional digestif, with nutty oak toastiness, great red berry flavours and milk chocolate creaminess. Delicious with blue cheese.
