Jane Hunt MW: Good red with hint of maturity showing. Mellow but somewhat loose jammy fruit on nose. Ripe, spicy, mellow flavours yet with stringy, astringent tannins. Pleasing but a bit awkward. Perhaps would show better with food. 15

Canalicchio di Sopra, Franco Pacenti, Montalcino, Sienna, 2007, Italy

Richard Baudains: Dried fruit and raw leather on the nose, with ground coffee. Under ripe tannins, but juicy fruit. Oak dominates the finish. 15.5

San Filippo, Montalcino, Sienna, 2007, Italy
Jane Hunt MW: Mid-red and shows some maturity. Light fruitiness, quite subtle. Astringent tannins omnipresent against which fruit struggles – there is a lingering and pleasing after taste of dried fruits and a savouriness. 17.8     Richard Baudains: Mature, slightly faded nose of orange peel and incense. Very oaky, over-extracted palate with big soupy finish. 16
Rosemary George MW: Some colour developed – quite soft smoky nose – and on palate. Quite nice smoky fruit. But a hint hollow. Lacks a dimension. Short, lean finish. 15.5

San Felice, Campogiovanni, Montalcino, Sienna, 2007, Italy
Jane Hunt MW: Very red. Suspiciously so for Brunello di Montalcino at 4 years old! Rich concentrated fruit – yet still seems atypical of Sangiovese – on the nose. Sweet oak aromas too. Dense flavours, astringent oak tannins. Could be anything but for sure is very atypical of Brunello di Montalcino. Good marks for a very well-made wine; low marks for typicity. 16.9
Richard Baudains: Very intense young ruby-purple shade. Sweet wild berries nose, with Sangiovese floral and a touch of white pepper. Sweet fruit impact on the palate, very big alcohol/acid follow through with oaky finish. 16.5  Rosemary George MW: Deep young colour. No colour development. Fresh cherry fruit on nose. Quite different – some liqueur cherries – mid-weight – soft tannins – quite ripe and flesh and not very Brunello. Quite alcoholic finish Lovely wine but not typical. 16

Jane Hunt MW: Red and shows some maturity. Ripe and mellow fruit on the nose with some subtlety and a light vegetal character. Pleasing and even elegant in a light kind of way. Firm but acceptable tannins. A ‘little’ wine that has been very well made – not a classic. 16.8
Richard Baudains: Nose of green herbs and leather. Intense acid-fruit entry, nervy oak tannins, bone dry finish with return of floral-red cherry aromas. Not ready. 16
Rosemary George MW: Developed colour . medium depth. Dry cherry fruit on nose – quite firm and dry and understated on palate. Potential to develop. Maybe a hint hollow. Dry. tannins. Quite a long finish. 16.5

Castelli Martinozzi, Montalcino, Sienna, 2007, Italy
Jane Hunt MW: Mid-red. Nose of fruit pastilles and rose petals. Very odd if 100% Sangiovese. Thin and synthetic. Bears no resemblance either to Brunello di Montalcino or to a quality wine! 14
Richard Baudains: Vanilla and icing sugar on the nose, with good Sangiovese black cherry and plum fruit coming out. Palate warm and round with sweet underlying fruit and tight tannic finish. 16
Rosemary George MW: Medium colour. Soft – a hint of cherry. Some liqueur cherry perfume on palate and some firm tannins. Very structured. Atypical though resembles others. 15

Jane Hunt MW: Deep red with just a hint of maturity. Layered fruit quality with a hint of star anise/fennel on the nose. All falls down rather on the palate with chewy, tobacco, leathery character and astringent tannins. Unbalanced and does not promise much for the future. 14
Richard Baudains: Sweet vanilla and powder puff nose, with gamey aromas at the back. Palate very full and oaky, with great concentration at the back, but lacking in definition 16.5

Fuligni, Montalcino, Sienna, 2007, Italy
Jane Hunt MW: Good colour and a hit of maturity. Vanilla oak clearly apparent and fruit is there too but by now rather subdued. Chewy wine on the palate – old-fashioned style, really could do better to keep more of the fruit and lose some of the astringency from the ageing in oak. Quite a big wine and some will like this. Needs a robust meat dish. 16
Richard Baudains: Closed on the nose. Palate dry, oaky, very concentrated, with very compact tannins and lots of ward alcohol in the finish. 16
Rosemary George MW: Quite developed colour – quite firm dry nose – firm closed tannic fruit. A hint of dry cherries. Medium weight. Quite elegant but not very expressive.   17

Richard Baudains: Good shade, some grading, fresh nose with delicate floral aromas and red fruit. Fine, ripe well-distributed tannins, chunky, sweet fruit finish. 18
Rosemary George MW: Medium colour. Some ripe smoky fruit on nose. Quite ripe and smoky. Mid-weight. A vegetal note – quite evolved. Quite elegant – quite tannic steak on finish. 17
