Stunning wine country properties: A chef’s vineyard home and four more estates for sale

Imagine summer evenings overlooking your own picturesque vineyard estate, or relaxing by the pool, glass in-hand after visiting a nearby winery.

Making wine is anything but easy, of course, and there are several things to consider when buying a vineyard.

Still, we've compiled a snapshot of what's on offer at the higher end of the market, featuring luxurious wine country properties listed for sale from Sonoma to Italy's Adriatic coast.

A chef’s villa with vines on Italy’s Adriatic coast

Price: €1.68m

A professional Italian-American chef who worked at the famous Waldorf Astoria in New York before relocating to Italy is now selling this picturesque vineyard estate on the Adriatic coast.

Described as a ‘contemporary farmhouse’ by listing agent Sotheby’s International Realty (Italy), it’s on sale for €1.68m (£1.43m) and lies close to the beaches of Senigallia.

An outdoor living space includes a swimming pool, kitchen area with a wood-fired oven and a covered orangery.

Meanwhile, a custom-built professional kitchen might tempt dinner party enthusiasts.

There are 4.3ha of ‘fully productive’ vineyards planted to Italian classics Sangiovese and Montepulciano, as well as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon – with some Pinot Bianco, too – plus 1.3ha of olive groves.

An on-site winery produces around 20,300 bottles per year, under the Marche IGT denomination, with ‘potential conversion to Rosso Piceno DOC’, said the listing.

A Tuscan farmhouse with a vineyard project?

Price: €2,628,601

A sprawling farmhouse estate with panoramic views nestled in the hills of eastern Tuscany is among current listings by Romolini Immobiliare, local partner of Christie’s International Real Estate.

Located close to the historic city of Arezzo, this 39.5ha estate already has gardens and around 800 olive trees but comes with a portion of unplanted arable land that could potentially be used for a new vineyard project, according to the listing.

Priced slightly under €2.63m, a farmhouse renovated in the ‘original Tuscan style’ with stone walls, wooden beams and terracotta roof lies at the centre of the estate, near to a wooden gazebo for entertaining.

It’s set up for ‘agriturismo’, with ‘agricultural premises’ on the ground floor and a first-floor living area split into two apartments, the listing said.

An outdoor swimming pool and sunbathing area looks promising for relaxing on sunny afternoons, not to mention poolside dinners on long summer evenings.

Luxury life in Sonoma with a 'wine cave'

Price: $18.75m

Making wine and tending to vineyards is, of course, anything but easy.

While some owners lease out vineyard management, or maintain a few hectares as a no-profit-pressure hobby project, an alternative is to buy into the wine country lifestyle.

This luxurious estate in California’s Sonoma comes doesn't have its own vineyard, but does feature a 'wine cave'.

There's plenty of cellar space to store bottles from the area's many top producers, too.

It requires a serious financial outlay, however. Priced at $18.75m, it’s among the most expensive properties of its kind in the area and was recently listed by Caroline Sebastiani and Charlie Luna of Sotheby’s International Realty’s wine country brokerage in Sonoma.

This is a rare find, according to the listing, noting the property offers privacy and space but is also well-connected – located close to Sonoma Plaza and a 45-minute drive from San Francisco’s famous Golden Gate Bridge.

Provence manor house and vineyard

Price: €4.25m

From Peter Mayle’s famous memoir to celebrity buyers like Brad Pitt and high-profile wine professionals, Provence's allure is well-documented.

This 18th century ‘bastide’ in the north Luberon comes with 13.5ha of vineyards, an orchard and panoramic views of the surrounding area, according to listing agent Wine Objectives.

Priced at €4.25m, including agency fees, the vineyard is described as being in ‘full production’ and the estate also features a guest house, plus three holiday cottages – although there is no winery on-site.

Wine Objectives, which specialises in vineyard properties in several regions, including Provence, Rhône and Languedoc, also said the estate’s current owner-manager is willing to continue his activity and contribute his experience after any sale.

Boutique red wine estate in Stellenbosch

For prospective buyers looking to own an established vineyard property in South Africa, this boutique red wine estate in the picturesque ‘golden triangle of Stellenbosch' could be of interest.

Listing agency Pam Golding Properties said this 23-hectare estate includes 16ha of vineyards with drip irrigation that are used to produce award-winning red wines.

Lying on predominantly south-facing slopes, grape varieties include Malbec, Petit Verdot, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Roobernet.

There is a four-bedroom Manor house, cellar with tasting room, a winemaker’s cottage and and other buildings that could potentially be used to create an on-site restaurant, according to the listing.

There’s no published guide price, however; this one is a case of ‘price on application / asking’.
