With more than 500 indigenous grape varieties, 20 different regions (including hundreds of sub-regions), and distinctive local winemaking styles, Italy can be a nightmare for wine lovers to navigate.
Quality, too, can range from footstomping grapes in backyards to uber high-tech wineries that are the envy of the world. All this means it’s crucial to find brands that you can trust to provide consistently high quality.
This is where Sensi Vini comes in. The estate’s home and heart lie in Tuscany, where Pietro Sensi first began to cultivate vines in 1890. Today, his great-grandchildren, Massimo, Marco and Roberta Sensi, continue that heritage.

Tuscany in all its glory
Sensi Vini’s collection is a superb place to start exploring Tuscan winemaking. It covers the full gamut of what the region can offer, from quaffable, weekday-drinking IGT wines to the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG.
The winery’s lifeblood, however, is Chianti, and with Sensi, you can try it in its many shapes and forms, including the honeyed ambrosia that is Tuscany’s famous dessert wine: Vin Santo del Chianti DOC.
The family also works hard to showcase the lesser-known but fantastic white and rosé wines from Tuscany. ‘These wines express a different and increasingly fascinating side of Tuscany,’ says Massimo Sensi. ‘Our white, rosé and sparkling wines offer freshness and immediate drinkability, whilst retaining complexity and food-pairing potential.’
Sensi Vini even makes a white wine from black grape Sangiovese – a relative rarity in the region. The result is a refreshing wine that preserves the aromatic elegance of Sangiovese. Expect notes of blossom, with hints of cedar and mandarin.
The estate lies in picturesque Tuscany.
Expanding horizons
Yet this is not a family that moulders in the past as its collection gathers dust. Over the years, the range has expanded to include certified organic and vegan wines, and Sensi Vini has applied its commitment to making Italian wines more accessible to other parts of the country.
It chooses the best styles from key regions – from a Sicilian Nero d’Avola to a Pinot Grigio delle Venezie – to create its Collezione range, a ‘Greatest Hits’ album of Italian wines.
‘We choose partners who know their territory deeply and with whom we can build long-term relationships based on trust, reliability and a shared commitment to quality,’ Massimo Sensi explains. ‘The Sensi name acts as our signature: it guarantees the care behind the choice, while allowing each wine to remain true to where it comes from.’
