Pale salmon in colour, a basket full of freshly-picked summer berries backed by the tell-tale, mouth-watering English acidity these pink delights are wines made for summer and glorious celebrations.

In fact, rosé is likely to become ‘one of the most important styles made in Britain over the next 10 to 20 years,’ as Oz Clarke put it in his 2020 book on English wines*.

The top examples of English sparkling rosés tend to be made mainly from the red Champagne grapes using the traditional method, with the best bottles capable of ageing for decades. In her feature in the July issue of the Decanter magazine, Susy Atkins highlighted the ‘fresh snap of acidity’ and the ‘subtle raspberry-ripple ice-creaminess’ that make them perfect apéritifs and great pairing partners for light canapes.

The delicate and poised charm also applies to still English rosés, where blossom, wild berries and stone fruits are met with crunchy apple acidity, zingy citrus and a touch of minerals on the palate. Some producers may choose to venture beyond the Pinots for diversity and introduce oak for polished mouthfeel.

In time for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we have listed up our top English sparkling and still rosés tasted by the Decanter team in the last year, with buying links attached.

There are more value choices among the still pinks than the fizz if the plan is to celebrate the national spirit with something British but not too pricy. Although the best pink sparklers are true manifestations of the skills and achievements of English producers in the last decade you may well be surprised.

Very moreish and textural - a great showcase of the evolution of Hambledon's Classic Cuvée pink iteration. Lifted nose, with notes of cranberry, pink grapefruit, cherry pie and almonds. The palate is enveloping and creamy, with crunchy red apples, pears and red cherries topped by a delicious umami aspect of cured cheese and salted nuts.

Balfour Winery, Brut Rosé, Kent, England, United Kingdom, 2018

My wines
Locked score

A great vintage that has seen exceptionally ripe fruits and an early harvest, with acidity level sits at 7g/l, lower than this wine's average. The percentage of Pinot Meunier (30%), on the other hand, is higher than usual. The nose is honeyed and aromatic, with blossom, yellow apple, freshly-picked raspberry and candied orange slices. A ripe palate of acacia honey-glazed lemon, yellow apple and red berries, seasoned with a pinch of cinnamon. Lemon curd and lime zest on the finish. Will certainly gain more complexity and charm with longer ageing under the cork.

A perfumed bouquet of rose petals, peach and red apple with a hint of soya and confected cherry. Having spent 14 months on lees, it was disgorged in July 2020. Spiced and honeyed on the palate, with cinnamon-seasoned cherry and almond tart, plus more peachy creaminess on the palate, leading to umami depth. Red apple peel and honey roasted almonds last till the long finish, with white pepper tingling on the tip of the tongue.

Pinot Meunier (47%) plays a more important role in the blend of Champagne trio, giving the sparkling rosé an elegant nose of French toast and cranberry. Crisp and deliciously saline, with a shot of summer berries and crunchy red apple acidity wrapped in a textured palate. Not overly complicated - perfect for outdoor gatherings.

Candover Brook, Rosé, England, United Kingdom

My wines
Locked score

John Davan Sainsbury, Baron Sainsbury of Preston Candover, dreamed of making his own wine ever since touring the vineyards of Champagne as CEO of the UK supermarket Sainsburys in the 1970s. The Hampshire-based Candover Brook estate is run by sons Mark and Julian, who planted a 5ha south-facing slope on silty clay loam soils with a free-draining chalky subsoil. Consultant winemaker is the very experienced Hervé Jestin, chef de cave at Duval Leroy for over 20 years. This is the inaugural release of a non-vintage rosé, 85% from the 2018 vintage, and the remainder from a solera dating back to when the vineyard was planted in 2011. The wine, a blend of 54% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir and 13% Pinot Meunier, aged on lees for 27 months in its secondary fermentation, and has a dosage of 9g/L. It's an accomplished rosé, with vibrant and perfumed, bright red berry fruit that bursts from the glass. On the evidence of this, Candover Brook is an exciting new name on the English wine scene.

Denbies, Broadwood's Folly Rosé, England, United Kingdom

Made in Dorking, Surrey by the long-established Denbies estate, this sparkling English rosé is at the upper end of the brut range in terms of residual sugar. It's been made in a ripe and rounded style, with red berry fruit to the fore and a mellow appeal. I would have liked a touch more acidity to balance out the sweetness, but it's undoubtedly good value for an English fizz.

Hopefully you're opening this outside, because it might be a little explosive. With it's candy pink colour, clear glass bottle and crown cap, this zippy English pét nat is fun and drinkable. There's a fair amount of sediment, but it's unobtrusive this vintage. Rhubarb, cherries, raspberries and sour cranberries all come together in a frothy mouthful. This is a wine to please a crowd, and won't be around for long once the bottle is open. From forward-thinking English winemaker Ben Walgate.
